Telkom ADSL 'Self Install' now available

So if I buy my own netgear modem/router, go get a micro filter from a telkom shop for my one telephone, I am pretty much set to do a self install? Does telkom first have to activate something before I can self install and verify my adsl connection?
They said to me I must wait until 24 August where a technician will contact me to set a time to come and install. I would rather do a self install to have my line ready sooner.
Why do we have to wait months for a technician to come and install the line, if the steps are so simple to do? Surely if its not a specialized task installing an adsl line, we shouldnt have to wait so long for someone with half a brain cell to come and install?

basically after a order has been approved, alocated a port and physically connected at the exchange there was a bottleneck the the installation of router/modems at the clients premises(which is not hard to do btw if it works 1st time).
Basically you can knock off some time..pending how busy the exchange that you are connected to is and port availability. Time saving is anything from a week to several weeks as the other things get sorted in under 3weeks, heck some friends got it done in under 2weeks. But problems with allocating ports can set it back loooooong.
The Installation of router is not just that tho, they also check stability + stats of line etc so that hopefully they don't give you a 1Mbps line but you effectively only get 100kbps etc. The verification online that is done in self install does this reporting and auto-tells you whether or not it will work at speed you wanted and/or speeds it can work at etc

Okay so I phoned Telkom and asked how I would go about doing the self-installation option. The lady said that you can only do it if previous clients have had ADSL installed at your location before, or you had ADSL installed previously. So you must of moved into a place which previously had an ADSL line installed and has all the correct wiring etc. If you are having a brand new ADSL installation, then you can't do the self-installation.

Well, I've just applied for an adsl line convertion of my existing line yesterday. I phoned them a few minuted ago to enquire about the self installation and a friendly, helpfull lady took my call. She said that I do qualify for self-installation (I've never had adsl before) and that Telkom should phone me back within a week or ten days when my adsl line has been connected. Then I should go to the nearest Telkom shop and they will provide me with an installation package, containing everything I would need to do the installation, including instructions and a number I can dial, should I need support. It sounds great to me!

Pretty much what I was told. Although when I asked what could possibly be in this "package" she did'nt know. I am guessing it is one or two POTS filters for your standard equipment and/or modem/router is you're taking the spermcount equipment.ebow3d said:

Well this is just damn annoying, I wonder why the lady I spoke to told me I cant self install because I havent had an adsl line installed before. I cant believe a company so big with so much money can be so useless and employ such useless people. You could probably train a monkey to be more helpfull.
On a good note, we got a call today from telkom telling us that that our adsl line will be installed at least 8 days earlier than what we were originally told. Im holding my breath...lets see if they actually deliver.
ebow3d I hope self-install works out for you. If it does you should document your exact steps and how you did what and post it here to help people in the future.

Well telkom just called and said that they may be able to install my adsl line tomorrow (saturday). If they actually do so, then I only had to wait just over 3 weeks. That's 3 weeks earlier than the first date they told me. Must be a new record. So looks like even though I couldnt do the self-install, at least I dont have to wait too long...if they come through that is. Still have to spend over R400 on installation charge though. But that's not too bad if the wait is much shorter. Apparently the average waiting time for a telkom installation is now 6 - 9 months. That's ridiculous!
I got my own modem, connected it all up and waited for the guy to come work the telkom magic and "install" it. When he arrived (pre self-install days) he said I had already installed it, sold me a splitter (so both phone and modem can operate) for R20 and left. Still got charged the R404 as it wasn't optional yet.
