Telkom ADSL 'Self Install' now available

Funny story, a similair thing is probably about to happen to me. Im still waiting for the technician to come and "install" my line. I got fed up with waiting, they said "maybe today", so I plugged everything in and setup my wireless network. My modem said I had connectivity to the dsl network, so I bought the webafrica prepaid account, and now im online. When the technician comes to install the line I can tell him thanks but no thanks. Unfortunately they still gonna charge me over R400 installation charge I bet.

I wonder if I tell them not to send the technician now, will they still charge me?

It's worth taking a chance - tell them you have self-installed and that you do not need a techie to come out, you also don't need to be charged ~R430 for installing your own ADSL modem|router.
 
Just a qn but wouldn't this thread be better suited as a sticky in General ADSL discussions? Not really news anymore, is it?

Thanks :) I dont like using the Report Bad Post feature as I'm never quite sure what the effect is. (I envisage a bat signal in the sky with one flashing red phone going off in rpm's office and another in the bot cave :eek: )

bot cave was alerted! Action taken! :D There is no red phone. The lights in our respective towns just dimm slightly... ;) I tried ripping off my shirt as I run out of restaurants and movie cinemas (just for effect) on my way to a computer, but I tended to make babies cry and people look away in fits of shock. No Superman flare in me... Damn!

retrenchments are good for the share price - invest in telkom instead of paying them the fee!
 
I ordered my home dsl 512 line on Friday( doing the self install) and was told it would take Telscum 6 - 8 weeks to enable the exchange. Or more precisily not to bother them till then.

Just want to know how long did it take you guys in the Pretoria area for them to enable your exchange??

I already have my d-link router and pots filters. And getting mweb to change my account from a dialup to a adsl account shouldn't take long. But I have to wait for telscum.:mad:

Took them 6 weeks to get it working for me in Hillcrest, PTA. I did self-install.
 
Self Install ony for certain privilaged..

Telkom cannot confirm self install to all it's customers- wholesale included. Yet another misleading attempt?

Telkom called me today. Said they are going to come and install the exchange/line on the 24 August. Still keeping my thumbs crossed.
 
I ordered a self install in May. I was able to confirm an instalation date of 13 July and, much to my surprise, had a call from Telkom on 12 July to confirm that they would be doing the install on 13 July. Fortunately I did not hold my breath as I'm still waiting (18 August). I suspect they have realised that they make more from me with the current analogue line, so are in no hurry?

Waiting for dsl384, and they told me I could self-install. Shouldn't be too tricky from what I've read here. I'm buying my own wireless router/modem to put in the home. Anyone got any useful tips for me on what to avoid/expect? Tel-kom said the line would be up & running on the 24th. Waiting with bated breath...

Billion ADSL routers [and customer service & support] are quite popular amongst forumites, Billion does have ADSL routers with builtin wifi, as do several other makes.

Personally, I have the Billion 5102 ADSL2+ router [no wifi], as well as a Linksys WRT54GL [bought a month back - 11 months after I bought the Billion 5102 - initially I didn't need wifi - besides I prefer my wifi on a separate firewalled subnet to my hardwired ethernet LAN].
 
So basically, if Telkom tell me that they are coming in t-minus 11 days to install my ADSL, am I wasting my time trying to self-install TODAY instead?
 
Well, I asked for a self install, and they told me on the 1st of this month that someone would contact me to arrange for install in 11 working days (the 14th or so). I plugged in a modem, and just waited to see how long it would take to pick up an ADSL signal. It picked one up around the 8th, and I've been quite happily online ever since then. A Telkom techie phoned me on the 21st to ask me when he can come and install the line, and was very confused when I told him I'd already been online for a couple of weeks...

:D :D :D now that's what I'm talking about - with a pinch of patience, most people will be able to do their own ADSL modem|router installation without any TK techies on-site & being paid installation commission, and for those that run into problems: find a way to get online [even with an old dialup modem] and ask all of us for help - it is what we're here for :).
 
My line was installed 5 days from order with the self install option. I am using a D-Link router (they'r the BEST) and very easy to setup, I also phone them on 08600 DLINK and the very helpful team helped me from step a to z

So far I am happy with Telkom's service and they just upgraded me to 4Mbps, now just waiting for the 1st to see if it will really make a difference.
