Telkom ADSL 'Self Install' now available

ic, would u suggest that I follow your advice before doing anything else with Telkom? Before I read your post I was planning on possibly giving someone in head office a piece of my mind and then depending on how that went, possibly giving in and paying the R437 to get this over and done with. Would that nullify any chances of a successful complaint to ICASA or anyone higher up in the Telkom food chain?

This order was made on 19 Feb 2007, and is my second self-install order for ADSL. The first self-install order (from Nov '06) was cancelled by someone other than me!
Yep, submit the complaint to !CASA first - then crap all over Telkodemonopolies - if you have to vent for the sake of your sanity :).

Be sure to Cc Dr Sharon Horton in your email complaint to !CASA - mention both ADSL order numbers and that Telkodemonopolies unilaterally cancelled the first ADSL order without your permission, and the whole of the long sad story - also be sure to mention that you are effectively being blackmailed into paying for the """free""" router and that Telkodemonopolies is not allowing you to do an ADSL Self-Installation as per your ADSL order...

SH's email address is on the list of search results I posted earlier.

You might also want to Cc rpm as well considering the following 2 threads:

ISDN to ADSL conversion complete!

This is my first post from my own ADSL line :D I was beginning to think I would never see the day! I can get on with my life now :D

Thanks to ic for all the advice! Btw, Dr. Sharon Horton kicks ass :p I think if she were to be Telkom CEO then they would become customer-centric in no time ;) Of course, the shareholders might not like that but as far as I am concerned they can go jump!!

EDIT: My DSL384 was activated yesterday already but I only got my router up and running tonight...

NEVER trust a word that Telkom tells you... they are 'lies to children'!

<rant>Great, now I have a R1526.31 bill to go thru and demand a refund on... how naive of me to expect Telkom to do anything but charge me for things they said they would not charge me for, as well as charging me for Closer internet minutes that are somehow non-refundable when I tried to get a refund on them in previous months when wanting to cancel them, but now it looks like I am being charged for using them all up before my DSL384 was activated... </rant>

EDIT 1:I am demanding a R1060 refund. Dr Horton is looking into it for me...
EDIT 2:I've been told that my refund has been sorted and will reflect on the next invoice.

ryan411 sounds just about right when it comes to Telkom. i been waiting for a new line to be instaleld and my new residence for nearly 7 weeks. finally on tuesday the techie came and installed the line...9:30am arrival, 3:00pm departure. fair enough i DID mention to new orders it was a completely NEW physical line as my new home didnt have a physical line at all.

NOTHING about Telkom is fast. i needed to apply for my physical line first, before i could apply for my new adsl. after the techie left on tuesday i immediately jumped on the band wagon and phoned to get self-install adsl. the response was that the current order hasnt been processed yet and will take 2-3 days. i phoned call centre today and by luck the new line order had been removed from the system and my adsl self-install order was placed, only to be told that this could take 14 days. this after i was told that my exchange DOES have free ports!!!!!!

fortunately i had the local techies cell number (very handy for future dealings), and gave him a call. he said that he cant do anything about the adsl since it didnt fall under him. GREAT!!! i went to the nearest telkom service branch and nearly threw all my toys out the cot, fuming that i had already waited 7 weeks for my new line and could not wait another 14 days. i was told that self-install should take max 7 days...ridiculous! still what can i do...so now its once again a wait and see scenario....

sumtime i wish i worked in the post office and wish i was disgruntled, it would then give me an excuse to go postal on Telkom.

Wireless Router Connectivity

Hi, we have recently got this offer with the self installation that comes with the free modem.

We had no problem installing it and using it. The Telkom Help phone service was good but the telkom shop staff absolutely sucked. They gave us the wrong ref number and details to setup the modem :(

The only thing i am trying to get working now is the wireless connectivity :(

Does anyone know how to do this?

I have gone onto the router settings and have setup the security as well as configured the laptop to connect to the router network.

I wonder if you can upgrade your line yourself as well, assuming that its not too complex. I phoned Telkom 2 days ago to order an upgrade and the woman said it'll take approximately 24 working hours. I phoned again this morning and another guy told me that an appointment date hasn't been set up yet so it'll probably turn into another month-long wait :(

Mine took a day to up to 4Mg , so hopefully it wont be too long.

It is just the price of the DSL service, i.e R270 for the DSL192 + the line rental + isp cost + modem cost if you dont sign with telkom. What you basically save is the R404 installation fee and if u believe time = money then u save alot of money.

U must mean DSL384. We no longer have 192. I'm busy with a friends self installtion at the moment , took about 5 mins and I was connected using my local webafrica account. The problem now is I'm trying to get his Telkom ISP details so that he can connect using his own account but so far I've been waiting on Telkom for almost 40 mins to answer their friggen phone. I think when they say its a 24 hour servoce they refer to the waiting and not the availability.......

Ha I called to join the whole Do Broadband 1 Gb thingy on May 21st or so.

They said it would be complete by end of July.

I called last week and now it is set for completion for Mid-November!!

Mid-November!! 6 months!!!!

Something about ports and some other jiberrish, anybody else getting the runaround here?

@Pico_Train : Shame man... I know of two mates who ordered their self-installs from Telkom this month and within 8 working days they got the call to say they were connected to the DSLAM and all that...

They live in Cape Town. Milnerton (in the north) and Rondebosch East (in the south).

yeah, guess those are higher priority or "enabled" areas. I live in the boondocks and as far as I know, the exchange is ADSL capable according to Telkom's check your exchange app on the web. So what the real story is is anyone's guess...

Yaths

I am currently experiencing YATHS with my self-install option. I moved from a 4mbps capable exchange to a 512kpbs exchange and along with the fall in speed is a fall in priority and service of installation. They managed to cut my line and re-route it to another phone number - now nobody at Telkom seems to know whats going on because it reflects as installed on their system. I am also struggling to contact any techie in the Florida Park (help would appreciated in this respect) area because the guys on the ground seem to understand the technical issues better than the people at the call centres. I have logged numerous fault requests and have been escalated five gazillion times. I am phoning every day now to confuse them even more.

YATHS = Yet Another Telkom Horror Story

Hey Guys

Another Telkom related issue. If one chooses the self install option, do you get a free modem with it or do you only get the free modem with self install if you take out a 24 month contract.

Thats what the wonderful helpful most intelligent people at the local telkom direct shop say?

Cheers

Myzer

No, you get the modem free if you choose Self Install, OR take out the 24-month contract. Either of those will net you the free modem

I was at Telscum yesterday getting my SIO order done and they were handing out some of the Mega100WR routers, they had also received stock of the Mega200 and some other one with VOIP too. Does anyone know the difference between them or do they all just suck?

You still get ADSL - we get nothing

Hi

You guys still get ADSL - all atemts at getting ADSL to our town has been fruitless (3 years trying now) - we have enough subscribers etc. etc. etc.

To make things worse - we often (more than often) get only 9.6 with our D/U modems - Telkoms retort is they only guarentee 9.6 - how can anybody do internet on 9.6.

We need ADSL for upliftment of our community - more than 70% has no access to any other market but local. We have Ouma Rusks factory - Organic biltong factory - Churchnet international HEAD OFFICE - an exchange thats only 10 years old and yet no ADSL.

Telkom does not care about our country or our people - if they did they would make sure they provided those services to all - all they care about is their pockets - all you have to do is look at the year end financials of telkom to see that they are milking the country - maybe some of the unions should start to get involved.

There are traitors and then there are traitors to our nation - i'l let you decide

lol :)

kleintoren, have u tried taking it to the media and seeing if u can give Telkom lots of bad press for this? Just a thought, use it, don't use it!
