Telkom ADSL 'Self Install' now available

I also did a verification and had the same error. They needed to re-activate the link. (it can only be used once)
 
So I already have a normal telkom line. How do I find out:

i) what speed this line would sync at, and
ii) self install instructions?

i) No way of knowing for sure. What speed do you get if you dial up on it?
ii) We can help, once the line is installed. It should simply be a matter of entering your username and password (or a guest account for an ISP which will allow you to sign up online).
 
Just adding my two cents to the convo. The self install option is the best thing that could have happened to me. Knowing how long installations typically take (9 weeks at our last place), we were "smart" and applied for a regular landline before applying for DSL. They promised us a turnaround of two weeks for the landline installation, but it was actually about 11 days. That was pleasant enough.

The day they installed the landline, we then applied for a DSL line, and got the standard party line of "4-6 weeks before installation". The next day, Telkom called again (that was the big stunner, Telkom actually called us back!) and offered us the self install option. They said a line would be available on the 8th of March, so if we did the self install route, we'd be online in a week rather than 6.

So we headed to the shop, bought a modem, and this morning, set everything up in preparation for Thursday. I was stunned to see a solid sync light come up. I was sitting on hold with the DSL line to get the settings for the router when they called on my cell and said the line was ready.

Minutes later, we were surfing delightedly. 3 days earlier than they had promised, and nearly two months sooner than we had actually expected.

Self install for me, all the way.
 
Just did my first self install for my chick. She went into Telkom Direct, bought self install option with wifi-modem, I went around tonight (3 days later) plugged in, it sync'ed, got hellova confused why I could authenticate but not browse, phoned Telkom and bitched, they say it has to be verified, they verfified it, DSL up and running. Viola

You know, it just figures. I go on happily about Telkom, and turns out we got shafted anyway. They quoted us a price of 699 for a wifi modem, so we just went to our local computer shop and bought a standard DSL modem (as we already have a wifi router).

Guess who's calling Telkom in the morning?
 
You didn't even need to buy the modem - Telkom are giving away free modems on the self-install option
 
To take advantage of this self-install special do I need to go to a Telkom shop with an order number or something?

Yes phone and get your reference number from Telkom.
Walk into the shop and walk out with a free modem.

Plug it in and run the software. If you line is active you are done else hassle Telkom until the pretty DSL link light becomes active.
 
I know this question has been asked alot but....

Can anyone help me with installing my selfinstall ADSL, from step 1 untill the end or just redirect me to a thread or something:confused

Because i read about people stealing your cap and the modem has its own password and username and all such things and i don't want the same happening to me...:confused:

I have my reference number, but have not been called by Telkom to say I've been unplugged from the ISDN whatcha-ma-call-it and into the DSLAM.

Are u saying that I can go get my free wifi router even before they have plugged me into the DSLAM? :confused: If so, what prevents someone ordering a DSL self-install and then going to fetch the free router and then cancelling the order? Just wondering... :)

When I spoke to Mrs Steyn at head office last week, she still couldnt give me an indication of when I would be plugged into the DSLAM. I ordered this self-install around the 19th of Feb.
 
What is the exact brand of modem and/or router that is being given with a self install?
 
When Telkom do the line install at yur house (as opposed to the router install) they levae you with a white splitter box with 2 outputs glued to the wall. One output for the router and one for the regular telephone via a filter.

This splitter has quite a lot of interesting smd components inside.

What does it do, and why is it needed if the self install does not come with one?

When you go and fetch your modem, you get a installation kit.

A modem, 2 filters, instruction ect!

The Netgear router came with all of that as well.

I am trying to find out about the splitter that Telkom installs at all of the sites I have been involved where telkom techs. were on site.
