Telkom ADSL 'Self Install' now available

Huh..?

Forgive me if this a totally noob question, but what do you mean by :

Line is not required.

I am required to have a normal telephone line AND an ADSL line, am I not?
Which comes to : R99.92 + R245(384kbps) = R345 per month line rental? :D

Sorry I did not express myself well:o

What I was trying to say that the special on the free router is for an adsl application with self installation. It should have no effect if you also apply for a line or not.

Telkom will of course try to tell you that since they have to come out to install the line, you can't have it as a self-install. This is classic Telkom bullstuff. Go to a shop and try to speak to someone that will confirm for you that you can have self-install and get it in writing. Then even if they charge you installation you can claim back and hopefully claim your free router as well.

And the ISP?

Do I have to use Telkom as ISP to qualify for getting the free modem/router??
Month-to-month...?

I did go to a Telkom shop, but the consultant I spoke with didn't even give me a reference number (to check my line activation online...)

What I do have to add is : He (Telkom) told me that because I'm paying a R300 activation fee for my normal telephone line, I don't pay anything for the ADSL line, and get the self-install for free... Aren't it supposed to be free in any case?

You don't need to use Telkom as your ISP, or sign a contract, or anything remotely like that. I rodered my closer 4 upgrade on friday, picked up my install kid (with free 'modem') on Saturday, was activated yesterday and was on Xbox Live (with a WebAfrica prepaid account ordered online) last night. Someone seems to have lit a fire under Telkom's ass..

The devil's in the details...

I read the fine print at the bottom of the ad that appeared in the papers... and it said u can use any ISP. The large print of the ad implies that u use Telkom ISP. Probably a ploy to get people thinking they must Telkom ISP! The advertising execs for Telkom are going to Hell I tell u!

I'd like to know how to check that online. How does one do that?

Chalk up another success story. Applied on a Thursday (15/02) and by Tuesday (20/02) it was all sorted out on their end. Picked up a free wireless router and all is well.
No contract?

A Mrs Steyn from head office phoned me to tell me that one needs a 24 month contract to get the free wifi router. I told her the ad mentions nothing of the sort and she said that's just what she's been told. She's gonna checkup AGAIN and get back to me. I wish Telkom staff could be actually clued up about their products...
[edit: She's double checked and told me again that I would need to sign a contract for the free router!

I can confirm that this Mrs Steyn just needs to get her facts straight. I applied through 10219 on Friday (23/02), collected my self install kit on Saturday (24/02) and my line was enabled yesterday (28/02) and bought a WebAfrica prepaid account.
The 10219 staff member I spoke to (Dawn IIRC) asked me if I would like to sign up for a TelkomInternet ISP account, I informed her I would be using another ISP, and there was no problem with that. As I posted on the xbox-360 forums:
-You DO NOT need to sign a contract to qualify for the free hardware.
-You DO NOT have to choose TelkomInternet as your ISP to qualify for the free hardware.
-You DO NOT pay the R200-odd advertised for the self install on Telkom.co.za, until the end of March this option is free as a promotion.
-If at any point any Telkom employee says any of the above is not true, ask to speak to a supervisor, they obviously slept through the training.

But really : Can anyone answer me? Should I have been given a reference number by Telkom?

There is normally a reference no for your order however most queries can be sorted on the line number. The self-install should be free - the R300 activation fee for your normal line does not change the status quo.

Problem with telkom is that often their staff are clueless and you need to carefully check your charges and fight to get the overcharges reversed. It took me two visits to telkom's offices to avoid being overcharged by about R1400

Phone 0800375375 and ask them to check your order number on your line.
Normally takes about 20 minutes to get connected so avoid using your cell phone.

Thanks, ok, I've seen this link before.

Does this only work once the line has been activated for DSL?

Your request for ADSL failed.
Your DN number and your order number are unknown.
Click on restart and try again.
This is what I get in after putting in my line number and order number (using a '/14' at the end. Their example uses a '-' instead of the '/'.

Please ensure that you have filled in valid order and directory numbers correctly before
attempting to verify again. Request was not sent to verification server.
OK, I get this when using a hyphen in the order number!

Obviously it liked the / a little better, but still didn't find your order, so it must not be activated yet. Keep trying both once a day or so.

Also, this is mainly for self-installs.

So after 2 weeks my self install has been done.:)

But my DSL link light is flashing (did restart my modem, checked the phone line)

Is it faulty??

I did my self-install verification last weekend and it returned the same message (Please ensure that you have filled in valid order...), over and over again. Out of frustration I phoned the 24hr ADSL help-desk and they confirmed that the verification tool is simply broken and that my ADSL had been verified after I'd run it once.

Please would someone tell me. do i need to go with Telkom ISP to get the free modem? Cos no chance in hell ill do it if its the case. Cos on the newspaper advert in the sunday times, it said sign up with any ISP of your choice. Also if i do have to go with telkom, is there a contract involved? So to get self install i need to sign a 24 month contract? or can i disconnect at any time...
I think this forum is 10 million times better than phoning that godforsaken call center cos i tried and got thru after 10 minutes, the idiot didnt know what i was talking abt.....
Thanks!

So sorry ignore my last post. I was too lazy to actually read the previous page.
So You dont need a contract and you dont have to go with telkom isp!

Awesome all sounds good

you don't sign any contract at all and you can choose any ISP you want. They will ask you if you want telkom as your ISP, but just say no. U will still get the modem for free.

Been to the verifyadsl website? You may need to activate it.

Otherwise give Telkom a call. If they say everything is up and active, take the modem back to the shop and tell them it won't sync.

If you have a friend with ADSL, plug it into their line and leave it for a few minutes to see if it syncs.

Edit: Ah, and as noted above apparently the site is broken. :)
