Telkom ADSL 'Self Install' now available

This is a cop-out if you ask me.

All Telkom are doing is getting rid of yet more reliance on staff - they've retrenched thousands already.

You end up doing part of Telkoms job.

I say get a Telkom person to come out all the time anytime for anything - the more people we can get working in this country, the better.

All this move by Telkom does is to save THEM money.

They truly are demonic ...

Although I am all for jobs....it is done this way everywhere else. I never had any one come to my home in London when I got ADSL installed there. To be honest, I only think a techie should come out if the line needs testing or if the client doesn't know how to set up the modem. Otherwise it's just a waist of resources to make a techie come out for no reason.

I think this is a good move on Telkoms side. But I still hate them. :p

I might be wrong but I believe the instalation fee will be much less now.

There will be no R404 installation fee.
There will be no wierd techie coming to your house during the day while you are not there to put in your line and come back at night cos he liked your t.v.
The waiting time will hopefully be alot less... lets see.

If I wanted ADSL I'd want it now. Nobody wants to wait for 6 months to get ADSL. Luckily my brother is a Telkom technician so I'll just call him and he'll do it for free.

I understand what you're saying about Telkom trying to make more money by retrenching staff. I'd hate it if my brother lost his job.

I really think this is more a case of trying to drive roll out rather than cut costs or increase profits. There are fully loaded ADSL exchanges out there that people can connect to, but have to wait for some techie to effectively rubber stamp the process.

Telkom wants as many people on board as possible before the SNO goes live.

I agree with with Doobiwan. The more people Telkom get onto ADSL the more money they make.
It's a good idea to have a self install option in my mind. Even if on 10% of the people on the waiting list decide to go Self-Install. Thats 1500 people x roughly R450 per month (An average charge? over all packages).

Thats R600000. Not bad if you ask me.

I wonder if you can upgrade your line yourself as well, assuming that its not too complex. I phoned Telkom 2 days ago to order an upgrade and the woman said it'll take approximately 24 working hours. I phoned again this morning and another guy told me that an appointment date hasn't been set up yet so it'll probably turn into another month-long wait :(

After cancelling my ADSL(1/11), at least I wouldn't have to re-pay the ADSL installation fee if I one day I have to get reconnected.

It is just the price of the DSL service, i.e R270 for the DSL192 + the line rental + isp cost + modem cost if you dont sign with telkom. What you basically save is the R404 installation fee and if u believe time = money then u save alot of money.

Im in the process of doing the self install, i have another thread where i am logging in what i do and when i do it, at the moment i am just waiting for telkom to phone me to say everything is ok and i must come collect the kit.
As i said i will log everything that happens so people who want to do this can have some kind of information and "guide"
and dont bother asking telkom for the info as half of them dont even know the self install exists...

I would imagine if it's anything like when I got mine connected in the UK. I got a package with the modem/filters (no drivers though! :P ) and an email/manual describing the process (i.e simply install modem, connect to phone line through filter.. that simple) and a note telling me that my line would be activated on the exchange side btwn such and such a time on the said date... It was that easy. Even the lack of drivers/installation disc was easy to rectify. Phoned Virgin helpline and was given the URL for the drivers and they have a pay-as-you-go IPS dial-up # which I used, downloaded the drivers and bob's your uncles, aunties live in lover I was sorted!

Oh happy days... :)

I agree it sounds like Telkom are trying to get as many ppl signed up as possible, but I like the idea of a: saving some money and b: getting it installed quicker....

i would rather pay installation fees than double line rental p/m
all telkom wants to do is look better at the least possible profit loss
R404 once off is better than loosing say line rental p/m!

I applied for my self-install this morning. I am on a tight budget, so I have been considering it for some time, but the setup costs made me wonder about it. I decided to go the 24 months contract way and the only cost involved is the R270 per month for the 192 line - nothing else! I actually went there, applied and got approved within 10 minutes. I regard the contract as a valid option as there is no modem fee, no installation fee and the monthly cost is linked to the Telkom ADSL rates (it comes down when they lower their rates). All I am waiting for is for my home line to be converted to an ADSL line (flip a switch in the local exchange). They said they will give me a call when the line is ready and then I must come and pick up the modem, micro-filters, surge protectors and software. I see this as a possitive step, because there will be many people who did not like the startup costs. For the not-so-hungry user with a tight budget, this brings the costs of setting up your ADSL at home down to as low as R370 per month for 1 gig with an isoft account (http://www.isoftnet.co.za/). The guy who does have the funds available (remember that for students R100 per month is a lot of money) pays R470 per month for 30 gig (using the Web Africa special).

Yeah i am also waiting for the conversion... was supposed to be done by today (ordered on monday, order applied for by the telkom people on tue morning), and when i phoned the wonderfully intelligent telkom lady she said "21 days"
so i realised she was clueless and ended the call.
Will phone again later.

So im guessing that if you do not have a line at all it would be quickest to order a regular line and then upgrade to DSL "Self Install"

Yessss

I applied 5 minutes ago.... she said my line is now DSL, I can go get the startup kit at the nearest telkom shop and phone my ISP to get their stuff and then I can connect the modem and microfilters and then I'll be fine....so hopefully tonight I'll join you guys on ADSL and not 56k

So not fair, wtf im phoning the @#@$Y right now...
O yes, where did you order from, or did you phone a number?
