Telkom ADSL under fire

What's with the CC?

Why does it take so long for them to notice? This has come up before and has been going on blatantly for some time... why does it take like 5 years for anyone to notice?

Telkom is cutting costs (seeing as they're willing to drop Telkom Media before their year report thing to investors) so I doubt they paid out the bribe money and now the competition commission is out for revenge

Yeah, and then 13 June will arrive, Telkom will have another six months, nothing will get done, and I will still sit here paying 100x more than the rest of the world for crappy bandwidth.

I hope you will pardon my pessimism, but the idea of Telkom changing anything is a bit jaded.

Ok I don't quite get this.
Are they saying that to be a first tier ISP provider they have to pay a fee to connect my DSL account trough to their network?

Second point I wish to make is with alleged Neotel's independent access to international undersea fiber and extensive fiber optic network infrastructure they are selling to corporates only at this point.. What is the importance of this 5 year pending ruling?

Unless of course answer to my fist question is yes and first tier ISP must pay exorbitant price to have access to consumer that already pays for their connection in the form of DSL lease fee.

In that case .. hurray viva la revolution .... I don't want to pay the DSL lease fee than.

I wonder if the CC works the same as the law in that if i commit a crime in 1998 then the law as it stood in 1998 is what is applied. they dont even bother looking at anything that came after 1998 as it is irrelevant.

so the complaint was lodged in 2005. they need to look at what the situation was in 2005. the fact that the big t have dropped prices since then has squat to do with it. it is how they were acting when the original complaint was made.

another thing is that ispa is being very helpful in giving them extensions when they ask for them etc. so ispa might have a slight edge there as the CC will go .... isap - helpfull / telkom - unhelpfull

maybe.... maybe not. we shall have to see.

"may face the wrath of the Competition Commission", "Conclusion very close"

...one may only hope in this country for the long walk to freedom for the telecommunications sector. Though ISPA at least tries for what its worth.

Dont hold your breath...

Sigh.
Havent we seen something like this before already...
How long has Telkom wronged us, and how long have the authoriities who ever they are ignored (on purpose) this? ag man 1, 2 decades?

Money speak loud im afraid, and government still have a huge stake in Telkom. The last ICASA hearing where that poor sob got hammered by Telkom's advocate for daring to lay a complaint against Telkom...
Maybe in the next generation of leaders we might see real change in government but certainly not in this corrupt one..

What are the competition commission going to do anyway? Fine them? They will just bump up the prices at the next price increase...

The only hope for world class, cheap telecommunications is a vibrant, competitive market. ICASA and the DOC need to get a move on...

Who cares about Telkom anymore... Neotel is almost here!
The shyte is about to hit the fan, Telkom users are going to leave Telkom so fast, it's going to go bang soon enough! :) Mark my words!

This refers to ADSL which Telkom controls local loop so Neotel cannot offer this.

Agreed, but what I'm saying is, once Neotel arrives, things will start to move towards the way we want it... Telkom is putting up a fight, but once there is another provider, everything will happen.

I thought that Telkom had told the CC some time back that only ICASA could regulate Telkom and the CC had no jurisdiction over them. Has the ECA changed all that?

Been keeping one eye on this one.
It seems as if the extensions were granted / agreed to as the CC has really got stuck into this.
The last few articles about this were positive and the ISPA was happy with the progress and the granting of extensions enabling the CC to dig deeper.
It seems thorough and I think perhaps the outcome will surprise a few..

Not that I have much faith in the DoC, but at least it seems that ICASA is picking up a bit. Anyway, I think the fact that Telkom get to file their proposed price increases with ICASA every year for approval is a sad indication of what the lack of competition does to a market. In a free market, Telkom wouldn't DARE file price increases. The cost of technology and the amortisation of their initial investments would actually result in price decreases. But what they're actually doing is filing increases simply because they CAN. All that ICASA does is ensure that the anual increases aren't excessive.

But the wheel is going to turn. I truly hope that Neotel NEVER have to file for approval of it's anual price increases because there won't be any. I hope that Telkom gets left with egg on its stupid face the first time it tries to file for an increase when Neotel has a comparative offering for less.

Die Telkom, die!!

I seem to recall this as well. Weren't they fined a R1billion or so, and then threw their lawyers at the CC?

Referring to this: "A few years ago a complaint was made to the Competition Commission by VANS. The Competition Commission found Telkom guilty of nearly every charge, ruling that Telkom had engaged in a "pattern of abuse" towards VANS. What's more, the Competition Commission was so distubed by their findings that they recommended that Telkom be fined the maximum amount allowed by the Competition Act (10% of turnover, or approximately R3,5 BILLION at the time)." ?

So when are Telkom going to be forced to pay - they cannot duck out by saying only ICASA - that would be like SAA saying only the aviation auth
