Telkom's ADSL speed is consistently below par. This is tantamount to fraud, I am paying for contractual .384Mbps and consistently getting around .320, often slowing down to as low as 3-8 bytes per second! :(

The sky is blue

Sorry... I thought this thread was for stating the obvious.

I would say get a wireless ISP - They're cheaper (no line rentals) and their service is usually excellent, but I see you stay in Nowherefontein so it's unlikely there will be many (if any) WISPs which will cover your area.

Telkom have done all this fancy upgrading without bothering to upgrade their capacity. It's great bumping everyone to a 1Mbps line but it's rather pointless if the ports are full on the exchange.

320kbps works out to 40KB/s. PPPoE overheads will account for the difference, so your line is performing at capacity and rated line speed. Back when I had 384k, I think the highest I ever saw was 42KB/s and that was with an excellent line in a low-density area. The slowing down of speeds to 3-8bps could be due to a fault on the line.
