Telkom bets big

SABC just received R 1 Billion, so yes it will never go down.

The fact that they're betting big on mobile is just pathetic in my opinion.

A friend of mine works at Telkom, I wish him well, but the sooner Telkom dies and goes under the better for SA.

I don't mean it just from a "I hate Telskum" point of view. I mean that if they go under then there will be a shake up of the industry sure many people will lose their jobs. And that is bad for those people and their families in the short term.

But after the shake up other telecoms providers will move into the void left by Telkom and re-hire those people, who will then be forced to change company culture.

Because the general company culture has been, don't do your job, wait for the weekend get overtime pay. And the management seem to have their collective heads up their collective arses.

Surely they have realised that their costs are too high, which is why they've lost customers? Isn't it better to have 10 million customers paying R100 a month than 0.1 million paying R500 a month.

10m x 100 = R1billion
0.1m x 500 = R50million

Economies of scale, Telkom you're losing customers because you are too expensive and there are alternatives. Figure it out, dumbasses.

Telkom is an anachronism, it is way past it's sell by date. And they are not really doing anything to change that...

Wow...can it be true...is the giant falling? Will we maybe see and end to the evil that is tellcum in my lifetime? I would be so pleased :)

This is bad...has anyone ever really thought what would happen when Telkom goes under? I don't think there would be any fixed lines in the country, except for large metro areas...

First of all...if it EVER gets so bad that telkom goes under, the government will step in and nationalise purely for the sake of saving the economy. They will keep the work going so that bussinesses can function. Furthermore they will then propably sell the bussiness off to some other company or maybe to several others. But even before THAT happens...telkom upper management and ceo will be fired for incompetence by the major shareholders...this has happened before in some companies...not common, but can happen. Then sum1 else will come in and either they will save the company by making it better or they wont and the government will then step in :P

I am still of the opinion that Telkom should be completely privatized and government should divest all its interests in it after it is split into 4 or more competing fixed line businesses...

I read that entire article, and I have to wonder just how stupid upper management in that company is.
Dave - enjoyed the post, maybe they should hire you as a consultant
If the Board listened to the Senior Management Staff - they would be in a far better situation but for Board to listen to them would admit defeat that they cannot do their job.
They should have left Africa alone after the Nigeria fiasco

They should look at Altech doing business in Kenya with KDN, lets see how that pans out
