Telkom blocking torrents??

Just ran a few tests on various ISP accounts on torrent hash 403638aaf1ca1626f0e1e13911d74332af306f62 as it seemed to be under-performing on TI Uncapped. This is a public as opposed to a private torrent (these were running fine). The full speed I use is 425kB/s as set by my torrent clients speed limits although I have an 8Mbps line, it should be noted that trying to download torrents at full speed can severely impact performance (see recommendations for your client, upload speed is also a factor).

TI Uncapped - around 20kB/s
axxess capped - full speed
TI Capped - full speed
AfriHost capped - full speed

... and finally back to
TI Uncapped - now bouncing between 180kB/s and full speed, definitely far from smooth.

In conclusion it seems that in my situation TI Uncapped penalises public torrents at certain times whilst the impact on private torrents is minimal.

As always - YMMV :) (and usually does it seems with TI)

I only managed to download a 100mb file last night, before I could download 2 gigs at a time. What's happening TI?

extremely slow last night again, is this a permanent throttling?

Torrents are extremely heavy on a network. I'm really not surprised that they've shaped the crap out of it.

From 12 to 6AM?

Since most people are encouraged/getting used to downloading during those times, I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier. Telkom is margin squeezing anyway, so shaping is obviously a nice way to help ease the network with the amount of extra users they got on board.

I'd try the cheap capped accounts from Web Africa. There's a free trial available if you sign up and you can see how it performs. Otherwise I suggest using a service like downstorm to get your torrent fix through normal HTTP downloads.

I used to be able to download very slowly but now completely blocked, even a night, thanks telkom.

I heard somewhere that you can save the torrent file name as .zip and then change it later? Or Proxy it in advanced settings, not having much luck though. Oh well guess it's back to reading books.

if you want a download that's less than 1GB, save the torrent on your local disc then go to http://www.zbigz.com. Upload it and download it via http. Downside is the download speeds are 1Mbps

I checked my usage on Networks the 2 torrents I had running and only picked up from just before 4AM till 6AM .

:mad:I'm in the same boat since switching from Mweb 2 Meg uncapped at end January.3.31 Gb this week opposed to 34.4 Gb for first week in Feb. on 4 Meg Uncapped with TI and 750 m from a new DSLAM. Any suggestions for new ISP who does allow p2p?

OK so it looks like there might genuinely be a problem with Telkom Internet, it's not necessarily a bad torrent issue. Great...

Does Telkom monitor this forum? Or are our chances of hearing from them zero?
