TELKOM busy Upgrading LOCAL LOOP

its amazing how telkom suddenly wakes up when the world cup looms. Isnt mobileTV supposed to be up and running as well?

sigh, if this is all true and telkom is getting a kick up its a@#$ to beef up its network for the world cup, i wish this all had happened sooner :P

....also, how is telkoms pricing going to change after all this?

i am not sure about the different coulours of cables belonging to different places... we have like a Telkom yard here in our area and they have Orange rolls of fibre optic although it says Telkom outside...

So unless telkom is actually in cahoots with neotel i think its up to the different companies...

I think the colours they are talking about are the colours of the corrugated ducts that the cables go inside.

ie: Telkom has green ducts, neotel orange. But contractors like Plessey (for Vodacom) use yellow ducts, not necessarily MTN.

Fibre cable itself is usually orange, yes, regardless of who owns it. Except when it is above ground in the open in which case it is black (like telephone or power cables).

DFA use red, green, blue and brown tubes in their ducts, so if you drive around town and see 4 tubes 3cm thick each being installed, it's DFA.

even if it goes into the duct is usually black I think. but correct in regardless of who owns it, it is often the same colour orange/black

I spoke to a guy at telkom in Feb which told me telkom is rather focussing on wireless technologies than on ADSL (I enquired about ADSL2+) because it's much cheaper to deploy and upgrade due to less cabling :)

Dunno where he got his info from, but that is not correct. Telkom's primary focus is broadband via ADSL, sub-rate and megalines. At this stage 3g wireless is only rolled out in high cable theft areas and selective urban areas. Other wireless technologies are rolled out in rural areas to replace obsolete systems.

Telkom would be shooting themselves in the foot if this was true but hell it wouldn't be the first time.. The nice thing about fibre cables is there is no point in stealing them because you cant sell them without either breaking the cable or the fact there are no buyers

Then why would they set up a Wimax tower in an area which is rich in ADSL users? They even supply ADSL to houses which don't have tar roads, on the outskirts of town (my friend syncs at 1Mbps). I highly doubt they've run out of ports and they built a whole building which is currently empty, which can support DSLAMs, in the area with a wimax tower being erected (not activated yet).

Wireless would require less of said cabling, making it cheaper so they still have motivation to do so. Wimax can be proper broadband too, so I dunno why it would be shooting themselves in the foot. What percentage of ADSL users really need low latency?

I trust what the techie told me since I've known him for years (dad of a friend of mine). Doubt he'd be spewing nonsense...but who knows. Will have to wait and see :p

OT: I drive past the Sentech tower on my way to work every day. Currently they are installing no less than 5 fiber cables to the tower ! Good news for those people that still use Sentech !

Ok what adsl users would need latency well lets see the thousands of south africans than play online games and make up a huge percentage of the market. Yes i know the money is in businesses but if you can give gamers a good internet for cheap that wont drop them every so often you will make alot of money.. And just because he is your friends dad doesnt make him right

He works with the computer systems of the networks and has been working for telkom his whole career. If that doesn't make him credible, I guess nobody at telkom knows what's going on. Anyhow, not gonna argue with somebody on the internetz.
