Telkom cable break causes Internet chaos

erm, did they not notice that they hit something hard when they were digging. Did they think it was buried treasure or something so they carry on harder??!

damn its slow - iburst and vodacom 3G

bladdy idiots

it will take too long to edit above post so im using "quick post"

i've been surfing for 10 minutes and so far i've used a massive 800kb! man - I could surf all year for a 200mb Bundle!

Seems to be back up on IS. Dropped that 3G which was costing a few $$$!

My iburst in PTA was fooked from 8:15 till about 16:30... a nice full working day wasted completely. They couldn't tell me what the issue was and apparently they had 3 seperate and totally unrelated issues...

Now that I know what the prob was it sounds like the idiot had 3 seperate but totally unlinked and useless braincells.

is this the 99% up time world cup practice

you realy think the world cup's coming to south africa m8
workers striking, sa telkoms and no light at the end of the tunnel ????????
IDK I real realy hope it can be done but the clouds aint got no silver lining at the moment.

This cable break was caused by “contract personnel working in the vicinity” of the underground optic fibre cable.
I'm REALLY surprised this doesn't happen more often, considering the amount of trenching done in the cities these days. So long as no one cuts the Seacom cable once its connected ;)

ADSL: Down
Iburst: Darn slow
Vodacom: Not usable
MTN: Barely usable

So much for redundant solutions. Oh well, home time ;)

I think you'll find that this is precisely the situation in which Neotel is the only working alternative - this failure had no impact at all on their network today.

It's not really about whether either network can fail, but simply the fact that you should spread your risk across at least two completely independent networks. At least, that's the logic that businesses should be using if they want real redundancy. Apart from Neotel, all the others ultimately depend on some common points of failure.

so i'm now paying for a 4M line and its cruising at 512k, wonder if telkom will give a rebate on my services this month

Of course not? Since when do you ever get a rebate for anything. Eskom load sheds, do you get a rebate? No. Water goes off - rebate? Nope. Someone comes and slashes your car tires, you now cant drive, do you demand a rebate on your car payments too?

I'd like to thank the people who working during the night to make sure in the morning I had 3G.

Yeh, and I'd like to thank Telkom. I have no internet. I have to sit at the keg and do my business from here.

Because its cold, the internet is slow, and I have to order stuff the whole time to keep using the internet.
