Hi,
I've been lurking for a long time but finally have a question to ask.
I need to remote desktop into a machine in Europe for work so need a connection that is responsive and reliable.
I currently have Telkom Uncapped 4Mb line which is good and works for what I need it to do.
My modem syncs at 10Mbps but I only receive 4Mbps on Speedtest. Apparently this is because I am on an Uncapped account which restricts speed.

I'm told if I was to change to a Capped account, my speeds would improve and get closer to 10Mbps.
Is this true?

I'm averaging around 50GB per month so could probably go to a Capped account.

And while on the subject, is it worth investigating any other providers?
Is Afrihost the way to go?

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I highly doubt this is correct. That sounds like someone in their call centre has fed you the usual call centre BS. I'd PM TelkomZA or post on the Telkom Uncapped thread about this.

You are probably on a 4Mbps uncapped account, thus only getting that speed even though you are synching at 10Mbps.

Capped accounts will run at the speed of your line.

Yeah, I'm guessing he's paying for a 4MB Uncapped account, so the profile will show that.
Capped is a better option for you if your usage averages 50GB a month.

Sorry I meant to say I do currently have a 4MB Uncapped line with Telkom.
It was TelkomZA who told me I am restricted to 4Mbps on Uncapped, but if I went to Capped I might get closer to 10Mbps.

I couldn't find anything on the site regarding that, and hadn't heard it before, which is why I was posting here.

Thanks for the info so far - sounds like it would be better for me to switch to a Capped account.

You could just downgrade your line to 4meg and save some cash.

If he's saying there's no uncapped account faster than 4, then he's wrong:

"do Uncapped Premium Plus bundle provide uncapped data and Up to 10 Mbps ADSL line"
http://www.telkom.co.za/sites/athom...bundles/&productname=do Uncapped Premium Plus

I hope you aren't renting a 10meg line with that 4meg account, because the rental is more.
