Telkom CEO Leaves

Incredible

This is very interesting indeed, any ideas who will replace him?

IMO exactly the opposite - I agree with Skip ITO this being more about a clash of personalities and incompatible management styles than Thabo saying 'lower the prices or you are fired', so I suspect that there will be a promotion from within the current ranks of someone that the rest are used to by now, probably the acting CEO September will become the de facto CEO...

Yup, that seems likely to me too. This might be too critical a time to start from scratch.

Then again, this might be too critical a time to get someone in that aren't quite aligned to what they're looking for too.

That is about the best news the telecommuincation sector has receive in months if not years!!!! Lets just hope that Telkom will wake and smell the roses now that this phylosical nobrainer has left and lets further hope that the broadband space can reap the benefits with some price reductions.

Speaking of wich. The beast said that it is considering some price reductions. Lets hope that huge reductions was proposed and Mr M didn't like it and they got rid of him to be able to pull it off...That is a bit far fetched but with this news breaking today you will never know what can happen next!!!

Such a quick resignation/asked to leave is not simply a case of clash of personalities. SA labour law does not allow this. I would hazard a guess that it was something far more serious. I would think a better explanation will be released on Sat in time for the Sunday papers.

The next CEO may just be someone from one of the overseas investors - hopefully someone that has the stomach to take the bull by the horns and drag it into the 21st century. His contract should clearly spell out that it is not simply about maximising the profit, but contribute to the overall economy of SA. With the SA govt share of 38% and PIC share of over 10% they should have enough voting power to insert this clause in the contract.

Friendly bet is on ic :)

Came across this on IOL of all places. I am definitely a couple of drinks behind the world on this...

*does the Papi Doom Dance*

What wonderful news to hear just before the start of a 10-day vacation.

Papi == 0wned :D

Now if only we could get rid of the incompetents at ICASA and the DoC. Ah well, can't expect miracles.

What happens if the replacement does a worse job than Papi?

Edit: It's amazing how quickly this thread has grown. Just goes to show that saying "Papi was unpopular" is an enormous understatement.

Had a bit of a think about this. I can see it going a couple of ways really.

1) Papi absorbed by some other company (wouldn't NeoTel be a peach? :D), carries on as he started: Much lip service and zero action.

2) Papi gets pissed at Telkom for dismissal and actually does something to help us all.

3) Telkom bites the bullet and finally appoints someone they know will do a proper job of it because they see the writing coming.

I'm not admitting to the fourth possibility where Telkom continue exactly as now and keep screwing SA for all they're worth.

Someone doing worse than papi... Not really possible cause all he did was talk, anyway good riddance to bad rubbish :D
