Telkom Closer 4 is cheaper than iBurst??

Of course, if Telkom were to be nailed for this, I wonder does it necessarily mean that the consumer loses...

TELESKUM = State owned so the government owns it therefore you try suing the government to let them relinquish their hold on telecoms...

I believe that all 1Mbps facilities have been upgraded to 4Mbps where existing facilities are able to handle the speeds.

correction all 1Mbps connection has been upgraded to "UP TO 4Mbps" connection with a MINIMUM of 640Kbps so in essence if you were getting 640Kbps you will be paying the 1Mbps service and won't be able to bitch and moan. So I wonder what excuse they have... "urm sorry sir but the copper pipes have degraded and you will NOT be able to get 4Mbps connection but here's 640Kbps for you enjoy!"

4Mbps

When my ADSL first connected last Friday, it was at 640kbps, and I must confess that I was disappointed. Now here is the big BUT. At 640kbps, the performance was markedly superior to what I had been experiencing on iBurst.

On Saturday, my connection was at 4Mbps and tested at 4Mbps.

While the 640kbps was in operation, the performance edge over iBurst was simply a matter of the latency which is superior using ADSL.

Once connected at 4096, I have noticed that the connection speed has degraded to 4000, with a low at 3900. These lower connection speeds are not really noticeable.

I assume you are just quoting your sync rates. What real download speeds do you achieve most of the time, I remember you posting something around 267KB/s when you first got 4mb.

I'm just wondering if 4mb ADSL does actually hit 4mb a lot of the time, or how close it gets.
 
Mine line peaks at just over 400KB/s. But it is very stable at those speeds.
 
well firstly I must say UP to 4Mbps is still highly unacceptable... if you want to offer then offer a stable 2Mbps and not a UP to Crap... this is copper that you are sending your data over not some wireless frequency that has millions of interferences!

nice speed there gatecrasher :D I must come read the adsl forums more often :D

iBurst seems to have lost its competitive edge somewhere along the way. People DO NOT want to pay more for a service that is slower and less reliable than ADSL. And ADSL prices are absolutely ludicrous, what does that say about iBurst?

I'm sure everyone knows this, no one expects wireless to beat wired (ADSL, cable etc) in any form.

But why does iBurst have to have such huge slowdowns during daytime.. the technology is obviously capable of delivering the speeds as you see at night, so does the problem lie with the network or the international bandwidth providers, or perhaps just the overloading of the system?

Anyway thats kind of O/T.

I will drop my ADSL and test with iBurst shortly.

I'm on G9 and I have to say that Gatecrasher post has convinced me to look into this ASAP. So Gatecrasher were you saying that your analysis was Closer 3 + OpenWeb (10G/30G/192kbps)?
 
Well I'd look into it if they had a Closer option for a 512k line. 1MB is still too expensive (only use about a GB a month) and 384kbps is too slow.

Normally, you pay R512pm for a 1024 ADSL line, but you can get Closer Plan 5 for R699pm which gives you the same benefits as Closer Plan 3. Since Closer Plan 3 costs R300pm, the effective rental cost for 1024 ADSL is R399. Your total cost per month will be R1347pm (R699pm + R648pm) which will provide for your ADSL rental, ISP fees, telephone rental, free after hours (Callmore) calls, 1000 standard call minutes, and per second billing to cell phones.
 
wow R1347... sounds like a ideal plan for users who work from home... is there anything for users who doesn't have a phone line? i.e a package that with phone installation could surpass the 3G package? I still can't bring myself to justify paying for a landline and a dsl line

The telephone rental is the bugbear. Outside the closer plans, If you choose 384k you pay R345pm before ISP fees. If you choose 512k you pay R462pm before ISP fees. For a 1024/4096 line you pay R612pm before ISP costs.

R612pm vs R699pm on Closer Plan 5 and the 4Mb/s boost is what make Closer Plan 5 so attractive if you are already paying for and utilising a landline.

To surpass the G3 package, without landline usage, you'd have to drop to 384k to give you R255pm to spend on ISP fees. For example, Openweb now have 384k openbrowse accounts from R249pm, which is effectively unlimited bandwdith (but no p2p on the openbrowse portion). But if you already have a fast iBurst connection, you may think twice before downgrading your speed.

A path from IBurst to 512k ADSL doesn't make much economic sense at all.

ADSL is really designed for heavy broadband use, and high bandwidth usage is where the cost benefits really kick in.

I don't know why its being ignored, is there actually any reason for not stickying it, or have you just not yet seen it?

Oh I see. I didn't read your post properly first time round.
 
I don't understand

The R699 is the Closer opt 5 cost. What is the R648?

My Costs are

Closer opt 5 = R699
Telkom ISP 3G = R249
Total - ±R950

iBurst 3g = R611
Phone a/c = ±R800
Total = ±R1400

Savings = R1400 - R950 = ±R400 conservatively.

If you have a landline, where is the argument?

Now that Telskum is this much better than iBurst, and we all know that Telskum is robbing us blind, what does this make iBurst?

From Hero to Zero in how much time?
