Telkom Closer 4 is cheaper than iBurst??

To summarise what Ed (iburst) has to say:

1. We are having too many sales of iburst to think of lowering the price or becoming more competitive.

2. The fact that we aren't that competitive is allowing us the time needed to try expand properly without lowering the level of service (too much).

3. Our focus is to expand, improve service, then become more competitive when the expansion rate dies down, (if need be).

Well thats how I see it.

So if you happy stay if unhappy leave, its really not going to bother them apparently. They just prefer happy posts here.

PS: Ed hows that mail coming along? Fake meetings? Half responses? Out of sight out of mind?

They just prefer happy posts here.

If that is the case then they should take their heads out of the sand and listen and act on what we as the consumers are saying.

Hi seburn and RVFmal

We do care, which is why we are here on this forum listening to all of the forumites. We want all of our customers to be happy and we don't want to lose any.

Sales growth has been fantastic but there is more to our strategy than just sales growth. If we can't keep our customers, we will be out of business in no time, and that's the reason for us putting in a lot of effort and money in getting our systems right and the people that work around them top notch.

We will also be competitive in our pricing and our products will be affordable.

I hope this helps guys, but I can assure you that keeping and making sure our customers get the best service is our commitment.

Regards
Ed

Pricing

Ed,
Today I have just had my Closer option 5 activated, together with getting Telkoms ISP 3 g service.

I am going to drop my month to month on iBurst to the minimum ASAP.

Although my activation today is only at 640kbps, it is streets ahead of what I have been getting from you.

It is sad that something that was very competitive in May 2005 when I joined iBurst, is now beaten by a terrible state-supported organisation which still rapes consumers with abandon. Yes, as a consumer I am being raped, but you are more expensive, and on personal observation, more unreliable!

Ed get your house in order and get those prices down. You have exceeded your sell-by-date.

Mze, from what I've seen in the past few months Ed is trying to help all those with problems, but since he is only one person with maybe one or two others helping him he can only do so much, besides I highly doubt that the pricing of the product has anything to do with him.

Lets see how things turn out in the next few months, hopefully the other departments will also start taking notice and do their bit in making iBurst successful.

fire away:rolleyes:

Strange that paying customers are defending iBurst's lack of CS. It's one thing to be on the forum making promises, when what customers really want is CS that delivers consistently.
In regards to the billing, maybe systems should be prepared before expansion plans (i.e. growth of 50,000)

ED responses and coupled with the real complaints raised here regarding performance, CS, billing, ... make me wonder if Telkom, Vodacom & MTN are really the only options for a corporate. Maybe better the devil you know than the one you don't...?

It's not a matter of defending Ed or anyone else, but giving credit where credit is due, he has helped many people over the past few months so I say give him a chance.
Negative talk and running down someone ALL the time who is trying to do his best to help is not quite the way to go about getting things fixed.

Granted the other iBurst departments need to get into the act as well since it's going to take teamwork to solve most the problems.

Just give them a chance over the next couple of months and lets see what they come up with.

Tell you what I have always fancied iburst and have huge respect for Mr Green but the argument for Telkoms cheaper options is compelling and unless iburst can come to the party they going to loose customers.

The net result though is ever decreasing internet costs for the consumer so yes we have been and continue to be raped but at least there is a bit of foreplay...

To Ed and His support tem

You guys have been helpful in getting me sorted out on iBurst. I personally, have had a lot of fun dealing with the challenges of optimising iBurst in my location in Blairgowrie, Randburg. Smitty hit the nail on the head when he identified Illovo as the best BS for me - good dbs and low load - both needed for optimal Iburst performance. My 8m mast with Yagi gives performance which is good.

It may be seen that I have spent time and money trying to obtain the best I can from iBurst. When I paid my money for the modem and entered into the month to month contract in May 2006, I thought that iBurst was the BEST, MOST COST-EFFECTIVE alternative for Internet and email service.

However, one must continually assess the cost-effectiveness of ones service.

iBurst is now expensive and has proven to be fragile in the mail server area. At the same time, my Telkom hosted email service has also experienced non service delivery, but not at the same time as iBurst. I have been able, somehow, to carry on with my business.

Simple financial assessment of my situation shows that Closer option 5 is more economical than iBurst.

Closer opt 5 = R700 (R699), Telkom 3 g ISP + R250 (R249). Total = R950.

Iburst = R599 + 12 = R611
Phone a/c ave + R800
Total = R1411.

Savings for me = at least ±R400 pm

Who can dispute the arithmetic which clearly shows iBurst is now too expensive?

I am not being unfair nor unreasonable when I say that iBurst, as it is, has definitely exceeded its sell by date. Price reductions are needed to keep the faithful in the fold. Gullible new customers are easy to capture. Keeping the initiated is essential for long term growth.

I have always supported the small business, the underdog. But now the cost to me is too great.

Ed, your marketing guys have to assess the benefit of short term growth at the cost of immediate performance degradation, versus the long haul of being a major player when the dust settles.

I will continue to use iBurst as backup to Telkom's Closer opt 5 package. but at the lowest possible cost to me. But this is where I have a major problem with iBurst - Frankly you guys are f**king us over big time with your selling additional bandwidth on your bottom end packages. Everyone everywhere is denouncing Telkom of applying the big d**k without assent and calling it financial rape, but what iBurst is doing with its cheapest offerings is worse!

Do us all a huge favour, get the marketing guys to respond to this type of complaint - make those bottom end packages good. Don't structure them with the attitude of "if the cheapskates out there take these packages we will take them on (f**k them over, but good) additional bandwidth!!!!!!" This is immoral, and if it brings iBurst into disrepute, it will be nothing more than what iBurst deserves!

iBurst, do something constructive, I was happy with your service from Randburg BS until you killed the goose that laid the golden egg by overloading the BS. I then had to spend time and money to merely approach the service that I started with. Then, unfortunately, you became uncompetitive against the ogre. Your future is in your hands. You can stay as you are and die, or you can change and survive.

You have no idea how much it galls me to have moved to Telkom, to actually support the b**tards who don't give a **** about the consumer, who have the most obtuse call-centres who cannot but repeat the company line and always frustrate you by telling you either what you already know or absolutely sweet f**k all.

Iburst, please wake up and be innovative. Your country needs you!

Yeah its not the most cost efficient option for you anymore. Alot of iBurst users don't have telephone lines thus if you took the R800 out of the equation (like I do) iBurst still comes in cheaper.

I don’t mind paying…

I don’t mind paying, as long as I get what I pay for - as advertised. Give me 1Mbps, throughout the day - not only after hours.

For R 1099 per month that’s the least iBurst can do. If they wish to keep on advertising and place more users on the towers I have no qualm with that, just as long as they ensure the BW is available.

200 – 300kbps during the day is not acceptable, not at that price at least!

Michael

while that's all well said and whatnot if you take an average joe like myself I don't have a telkom line, I don't pay anything more than R599 for a 3gig package, but as you said telkom's closer plans starting to sound better and with the additional 30gig isp fees you can get it seem as telkom's looking like the better option.

So if Iburst has something like that in the works, given the fact that 2Mbps isn't very high on my list, but providing your customers with 30gig unshaped service at 1Mbps would make iburst look highly ideal

By taking closer opt 3 your telephone account would reduce to R300 if all your calls fall within the closer rules. Therefore your monthly cost would be R911 with iBurst as opposed to R950 with closer 5

Mze, just out of interest. Why did you take iBurst over ADSL in the first place?

It is fairer to take Closer 3 out of the equation.

That leaves rental for a 4Mb/s line @ R399pm
Then you need to add ISP bandwdith costs.

To replace G9, you could use Openweb 10Gig + Openbrowse for R648pm. Total R1047 (ADSL) vs R1099 (G9).

You get 10Gig International access plus 30Gig Local access and 192kbps throttled access after your international cap.

That 4x faster access speed, an extra International Gig, 30 extra local Gigs, and 3x faster throttled speed. For R52 less per month.

And, of course, additional bandwidth, if required, is available from R50/Gig and upwards. On Iburst it starts from R139/Gig and upwards.

And for around R500pm more than the G9 package you get ADSL uncapped! An option sadly lacking on iBurst.

For non-Telkom, iBUrst G3 users, there is a still some economic sense for remaining if they are not prepared to drop to 512k or 384k ADSL. But choice, flexibility and the cost of additional bandwidth is still a serious drawback on IBurst.

Why did I take iBurst in the first place?

At the time, iBurst was the best and most cost-effective service offering good performance.

As stated elsewhere, in May 2005 in Randburg, with my UTD on my desk, I was getting up to 1.3mbps downloads. By the end of the year my download speeds were pathetic. I got a free directional panel modem, which when properly set up on a 6m mast gave me ±400kbps with lousy pings.

In pursuit of download speed, I bought a high gain Yagi on an 8m mast, and achieved up to 600kbps with lousy pings. The download graph looks like a saw-blade with horrendous teeth.

Closer 5 gives me speed, mostly 4096 tested downloads. Pings averaging 31ms. A flat-line graph.

And as stated previously, ±R400 saving.

Where iBurst was, in my opinion, my best alternative in May 2005, In February 2007, in my particular circumstances, Telkom opt 5 + Telkom ISP is more cost-effective AND more pleasant to use.

I have added to my cost by keeping iBurst in its cheapest form to ensure that I always have email backup. My saving is now only ±R200 per month.

If iBurst were to stop raping clients for top-up at the bottom end of their package scale, dealing with iBurst would be so much more pleasant. It would be the sort of approach that I would unreserveably recommend to my friends and business colleagues.

In reality, iBurst has simply been out-marketed by the ogre!

/off-topic
Guys... I'm a bit iBurst ignorant and no legal expert, but isn't another core issue the fact that Telkom is using its monopolistic dominance to undercut the competition. Telkom packaging DSL and POTS services together, whether by Closer Plans or otherwise, seems to me to be on the same level as Microsoft including IE with Windows and all that other illegal monopolistic behaviour it was nailed for.

Obviously Telkom services are overpriced and should be much lower anyways, but the fact that they only reduce their prices in the face of competition just stinks.

@Ed: Does iBurst consider Telkom to be using its dominance in an anti-competitive manner?

Of course, if Telkom were to be nailed for this, I wonder does it necessarily mean that the consumer loses...

Sorry, just thinking loud... carry on with the debate :D

Gatecrasher.
it looks like a much better alternative to iBurst! but looking at the Telkom website, a Closer 5 line is only 1Mb/s. where does the 4Mb/s line come from?

scud

Thats still a grand a month though. For an extra +/- R300 you could have uncapped 512kb line.

1Mbps to 4Mbps

I believe that all 1Mbps facilities have been upgraded to 4Mbps where existing facilities are able to handle the speeds.
