Just had a phone call from a very rude and aggressive lady informing me I must cancel my copper line and go over to fibre at a much higher price. If I do not agree then they will cut me off.

They must just try and be rude and aggressive towards me.

Cut off my service if you have to. I'll find someone else that actually wants my R760 per month.

On Tuesday 27/8/2019, 9.20 am, I got the following SMS: "IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM TELKOM. Telkom is discontinuing copper in your area. You have the option to migrate you current service/s to Fibre, the most reliable internet available. A Telkom agent will contact you during August to discuss your migration options. To book a call back option within 48 working hours, reply with your name and contact number. We value your continued support. Telkom Team".

Somebody from Telkom's "Migration Dept" (tel 0800-253-263) phoned me. I was offered "specials for the customers being migrated from copper". These sounded expensive and not so special to me, so I said I wanted to think about their offers, and phone them back. I was told, in typical Telkom fashion, that I can't phone them, they will phone me back. They phoned me back 4 days later, on the day I requested, and I told them none of their offers suited me. I was then told my copper services (landline with extra handsets on the same line, anytime calling plan, and ADSL line) would be terminated a month from this conversation, or earlier if there was copper theft or a major fault in my area, neither of which Telkom would repair.

I then did intensive Googling, phoned several ISPs, and visited shops of all 4 mobile network providers (Telkom, MTN, Cell C, Vodacom) to learn about substitutes. I looked at how I use my landline, the internet, and how much data I needed monthly, and realised that I must find a solution that fits how I use these services, without too much increase in cost. I also realised I did not need Telkom if I could no longer have a landline or ADSL line. This was A GREAT OPPORTUNITY to divorce Telkom, from which I had excellent service until about 6 years ago. After that, I had Telkom frustration at every turn, from trying to get faults logged and repaired, to difficulty about finding out about their products, using the website, etc.

For Internet & data: I need 40 Gb anytime data per month, internet connection mostly for 2 computers & 1 smartphone used at home, and don't need very fast line speeds. I have chosen to go fixed LTE with either 1) MTN's 40 Gb anytime + 40 Gb night data, sim only, R299/month, 24 month contract; or 2) Vodacom's 50 Gb anytime + 30 Gb night data, sim only including connection fee R307.50/pm, 24 month contract. I bought my own LTE modem, to avoid possibilities of modems locked to particular providers, or providers running out of stock. Telkom is offering LTE with various data amounts, sim only or with modem, 24-month contract; the same Telkom offer is available from some ISPs with no contract, eg. Axxess, Afrihost, Mweb. If you want fibre, the cheapest I have seen is from ISPs, including the afore-mentioned, including free installation and modems, 8mbps speed, uncapped data, R399/month on Openserve/Telkom, R499/month on Vumatel. I did not look at other fibre services, because Openserve and Vumatel are the only ones in my area.

For voice calls: VOIP, and Cell-C, look like the cheapest.
Look at VOIP products from Vox, Axxess, Mweb, etc. Voip is available on cordless or fixed phones plugged into the back of a modem, additional cordless handsets are available, but the modem and phones require electricity to work. In addition or alternatively, you can have the same VoIP service on a smartphone app, eg Zoiper, Bria., Vox's Vobi. There are also phone calls from apps where both parties have the same app, eg Whatsapp, Skype.
On CellC prepaid or contracts, "Anynet Voice Bundles" range from R7 to R200. As an example, the R200 bundle lasts a month, and gives 900 minutes (15 hours) at 22c/minute, to most numbers, including free calls to toll-free numbers. For the numbers not included in the voice bundle, eg 087-numbers, Sharecall numbers like 0861-, CellC's prepaid 66c/minute plan is useful.

Good Luck to all those moving from copper to mobile and/or fibre.

You have fibre from 2 different cable providers and came here to complain why your copper is being discontinued.....

If you are complaining about R399 for uncapped unshaped free installation free router no contract then I'm really keen to know what you are currently paying total because I promise you it's not less than that.

i still don't get why so many guys in areas with fibre coverage are reluctant to move off ADSL:cautious:

I wish I had fibre in my area, I would dump Telkom in a heartbeat.

For me it's simple. I need to have use of more than one IP address per day. Vumatel can't accomodate this.

If I had Openserve Fiber, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

If there was fiber in my area, I would ditch dsl in a heartbeat. I seriously cant wait to get off copper.

I am, however, very concerned of the possibility of my area getting LTE only instead.. not keen on making a jump to that. Will never get a package similar to what I have now and pay the same amount.

Agreed they are not bothered to roll out fibre in my area also, not keen on Lte at all.

Just got a call from 2 people claiming to be from Telkom
basically just telling me that telkom is removing our line and they will send us a phone and sim

when i asked about a switchboard and router they had no straight answer

Ditto here - 2nd call today that they intend to pull/disconnect copper when there is no fibre replacement option in place. Would assume they expect movement to LTE
