Sounds great. starting to dream now about such a device capable of having a usb VOIP phone plugged in - the next step. Does the phone plugged in work over GSM at cellular rates?

I agree. They are currently are making a lot of moola out of adsl and seemingly not interested getting involved in price wars. Does not matter to them what people do at the moment. The monies are coming to them anyhow. They got their eye on that mobile market.

With the monthly Telkom contract how many MBs per month would I get? I have the Huawei E220 modem which I got as part of a contract with a different SP at R119 a month but only 250MB per month. That contract expired about 6 months ago. I am trying to work out if I would be better off if I switch to Telkom. I cannot get 3G in the area I live but connect with 2G. I wonder if I will have the same problem if I go over to Telkom. At the moment I am logging on to Voda.
 
Anyone know if you can simply buy one of these Telkom specials modems for the advertised cash price, WITHOUT also signing up for a 24-month contract?

I bought an E220 on that basis a while ago, simply cash over the counter and cheers, but given these special prices I have a suspicion that wouldn't apply. Anyone tried it?

I asked Telkom this exact question and have been assured you can - no strings attached.
 
Follow-up to the above: yup, it works, though stocks appear to be limited. I handed over cash and got back one of these bargain-priced modems in return, no paperwork, no contracts. The unit is pre-loaded with the very serviceable Huawei Mobile Partner software, which unlike its MTN and Voda counterparts, DOES allow access very easily to any network -- I'm running the unit now for both MTN and VC data, switching easily.
 
I bought the E960 from telkom and inserted my MTN data card and it is working 100% on my Laptop via the wireless network. I currently have a unsecured (no password) network and would like to know how I add a password so that the neighbours don't steal all my MB's!
