Telkom defends ADSL capping claims

Whether or not we are being hard capped is in fact the least of our concerns with regards to broadband internet. Although I fully believe that what Steven Hayward has been saying over the past month has been totally misleading and blatantly stupid, not only concerning caps but Telkom in general.

Hell I don't mind being hard capped at all, provided I paid a reasonable amount for what I got. For instance being hard capped on a ten gig account for R100.00, would anyone complain?? No.

I believe our main concern is ADSL line rental and the absurd prices of our current capping policy. If only Telkom/SAIX would learn basic economies of scale and become more proactive with growth and development. For the life of me I am fully convinced that those running SAIX are f***ing lazy, greedy bastards and thats basically what it all amounts to. If I am wrong then it can only mean that they are completely stupid, and I mean stupid as in a little behind on the evolutionary scale. Monkeys to put it more frankly.

So ICASA must enforce lower capping prices and eliminate the ADSL line rental fee. But will they do this? NO! Because they either cannot or will not. A move such as this should have happened long ago but sadly those in charge are not qualified, corrupt and only have their own interests at heart. I call them selfish pricks!

Are we still trialing products and technology?? Talking about the SNO?? Saying everything is imminent??

What does it take for SAIX to drop prices? One word from their CEO?
What does it take for ICASA to enforce no line rental? A letter from the DoC?
I am certain that all this time has gone by with no change and within that time it could have taken just one day to make it better for all of us!

SAIX is a DIVISION of TELKOM. SAIX is not a COMPANY. SAIX is TELKOM.

Telkom is a problem that will not go away in the near future. This spoke person obviously is highly paid to speak this kind of hot air.

There neeeds to be a clearly defined set of rules. Im very glad that we are often getting more than we pay for (at least according to people here...3gb acc getting 10 etc) but I dont want to be beholden to Telkoms largesse and have them implement capping when and where they feel it is needed.

Mr Hayward has once again proven that he deserves to be at Telkom. If anyone with a half a brain worked at Telkom I'd be very dissapointed in them.

Here's a copy of email received on 26 March 2007 (the previous day my combined total was 1.11GB):

"Dear subscriber
According to our records your total usage as at [2007-3-26 00:00:01] has reached and exceeded the threshold for the overall service.
Username : [email protected]
Uploaded : 978.84MB
Downloaded : 3.33GB
Combined Total : 4.29GB
Service threshold : 2.00GB
Reaching the threshold has resulted in your username being disabled from our network of services until the 1st of next month.
Your actions have resulted in your username being added to our list of high-end users and repeated behavior of this nature could result in an overall blacklisting of services from TelkomInternet."

This was a hard-cap. I could not connect at all and was told by Telkom that my service had been suspended, so could not even access email. To add insult to injury, the jump from 1.11GB to 4.29GB happened while I was asleep, so was presumably a result of someone hacking into my account.

It's time to ditch Telkom as my ISP, although this is going to cause massive inconvenience 'cos of changing email address. Any suggestions for alternatives would be appreciated.

That's the standard generated letter from Telkom once they hard cap you.
The amount at which they hard cap can vary, depending on the time of the month. You can then only connect to Telkom's website, online banking sites and Telkom e-mail.
If you use a lot of bandwidth from the 1st of the month, you might even reach 17Gb by midmonth before the hard cap kicks in, 10Gb by 3rd week and if you're a low end user (less than 5Gb pm) you might get hard capped at around 4Gb towards monthend (last week of the month).
I have a 3Gb account which gets capped at around 10-12Gb by mid month every month, then I switch over to my 2Gb "top-up" account which (usually) lasts me to month-end, usually another 4-5Gb.
My average monthly use between the 2 accounts totals to over 16Gb.
