Telkom defends ADSL usage based billing system

telkom - you're ignoring the main issue - You charge too much for everything. Is that simple enough for you?

"White added that this new billing system would better accommodate the 96% of ADSL subscribers who use on average 1.4 Gigabytes per month."
It just does not stink right! If 4% (4000 users at current uptake) of the ADSL user base is using 50% of the available bandwidth then Telkom have no business playing in the Broadband arena as clearly they do not have the capacity to offer it. What will happen if they reach their target of a million new subscribers? I guess we wont be "downloading life" anytime soon but we can sure watch it drip down the pipe at the speed of evolution.

I hope he meant 50% of the currently used capacity, because that might make sense.

The solution is to charge a flat, SANE rate per GB for all traffic.

"To ensure that the 96% receive a good quality ADSL service capping is essential. The high end users are not Telkom’s target market for their shaped products which are designed for emails and web surfing, added White. He suggested that a more suitable product is their unshaped service which is tailor-made for P2P applications, gaming and related activities."
So if the 4% "abusers" move to a R2700.00 pm uncapped product then suddenly there is no network capacity problem? It must be voodooband then.

OMW i hope the people responsible for this at telkom just f*** off and die

Im actualy on telkoms side with this.
if i can remember right i was paying R219.00 for a 3Gb telkom shaped account
post 1/11 a 3Gb shaped account from imaginet cost R195.00 and u dont have any cap u pay R65.00 per Gb after cap.
before november i dont think u could get any unshaped account for less than 4GB at R450.00+ now ucan get a 2Gb unshaped for R240.00 and then R130.00 per GB after u reach the cap.

I think thats enough to say that telkom has not screwed us over.
yes maby for the "abusers" it will cost alot. But do you realy need every anime movie ? for bussiness that need alot of bandwidth there is always that uncapped salution.

think again...
Is telkom realy screwing us? you people are only being feed the bad stuff about telkom and dont realise whatthey are realy doing.

Edited :
another thing most telkom account users should have found out now that telkom is basicaly uncapped. I am not sure how it works but i have used more than 30Gb for this month and still not capped. So dont go saying that telkom is screwing us blah blah blah before u check the real stats.

This man should learn his place! It is not his concern what the tone of a question is. He is there in a professional capacity and good form in this instance would have been to discount the question with facts. The truth is he couldn't do it and harped back to the "WE ARE TELKOM BUGGER THE REST!" mentality for defence.

We don't fall for it mr Matthyser! The consumers know the truth now, the cat is out of the bag. We are not below you (even though you might think that) but above you! We stand even higher than your shareholders for whom I feel very little sympathy when it comes to Rands and cents. If pleasing them means walking over me (the consumer) Telkom and you have another thing coming mr. Matthyser!

Smile! You are now in the spotlight. As are you mr White... yes, I know you are reading this. If not, then it gets reported to you... so go and report dear reporters! Tell your bosses that we are waiting for cheaper, better and faster services! Sooner rather than later would be nice.

:D

Hi anonymity,

I hope you realise what you have written :

You've used over 30GB - if this was unshaped at your R130/GB then your bill
so this month would be about R4000.

I am sure you can see why telkom has introduced the per gig billing.
It achieves two objectives :

Seriously greater income.
Seriously less infrastructure.

By allowing telkom-interneters to go over the CAP telkom is trying to smack the competition into touch.
rickie knows this and can't hide it - he's just not a pro.

Yes they arescrewing us and they are using the biggest baseball bat they can find to do it. Look at all the facts, not just the propaganda you may be happy to pay +_ R65.00 per gig + line rental when in any civilised country you can get the EXACT same gig of data faster, cheaper and if its a gig of gameplay u get it unshaped AND you dont have to pay a line rental

Telkom adsl is intended for browsing the web and reading mail (at least thats what telkom would like you to think), and in that case yes a 3gb cap
is more than adequate this however is not what real dsl and broadband is intended for, you should be able to stream movies/tv/audio , play online games, download large files etc.
if you do these things with a std 3gb acc from saix you will be hardcapped before you can say "stfu telkom".

fact is telkom has turned dsl into dial-up.ver2.0

Edited :
By the way you can find comparitive pricing all over this site and hellkom and anyone who says you cant compair prices of telkom dsl with international standard is an idiot
The reason most users dont reach their cap is that if they did they would then have to pay even more money, so most people ration their bandwidth. It would be interesting to see the average user stats for a month where telkom allowed every1 to download as much as they want for free with no shaping and gave users fair warning of this trial period...

Based on your figures you will be charged 240 + 3640 if you only do the 30Gigs. I suspect you will have done about 40 at your current rate.

So at month end expect an account of R5180. Still feeling chuffed?

Gig or no gig billing....

Forget about per gig billing....WHERE DOES THE R680 subscription go?
It shore as hell doesnt buy any bandwith ...... that is what da problem is....
me finks.

We both know how right u are antowan :D
they should know not to cause *** anymore. they just going to dig their hole even more.

Cant wait to see what happens to telkom in the future. Its going to be funny.

Sheesh, I have met 2 planks that have more of an IQ than this guy. if 90% of telkoms customers have 2 gig accounts of course 1.4Gig is the overage. ARGH!!!!!! Do you have to fail an IQ test to get in to Telkom Public relations!

The stupidity and arrogance drive one to despair.

Steven "Pawpaw" White says:

4% of the subscribers are using around 50% of the network’s capacity. To ensure that the 96% receive a good quality ADSL service capping is essential.

NO! You HAVE the bandwidth to accommodate ALL your clients. Remember CLIENTS? Those people who pay your salary??

Rikus "Windgat" Matthyser "responded aggressively stating that he took offense to the tone of the question".

“I am allowed to manage my service in a manner that best suits the needs of my customers. I am currently trying to accommodate those 4% of users.”

Rikus old boy, pop a valium and control that attitude! Glad you are trying to accommodate us - please make it affordable, and hurry up! Toddle down to Papi's office and ask him to free up a bit more SAT-3 for you, and we'll all be happy.

Papi - get Rikus to actually get in touch with the "needs" of his customers, as your organization clearly has no clue about them at this time.

/Peter_J himself pops one of those recommended valiums to prevent imminent stress-induced stroke

WTF is Telkom on about. If everything was running so smoothly, they would not be having press releases over their new pricing structure. They are the most expensive provider on earth and yet they still try and defend it?

According to Steven White, Telkom’s executive for product development, 4% of the subscribers are using around 50% of the network’s capacity. To ensure that the 96% receive a good quality ADSL service capping is essential.
... Telkom have lied so much in the past, what make this any different? Show us proper figures!!! I believe nothing that comes out of that company. 2 weeks ago, they had to apologies for lying because of twisting facts.

Rikus Matthyser, head of marketing for TelkomInternet, responded aggressively stating that he took offense to the tone of the question.
He added, “I am allowed to manage my service in a manner that best suits the needs of my customers. I am currently trying to accommodate those 4% of users.”
How many adverts have been withdrawn in the past 6 months. You are lucky that I was not there. You would NOT have taken offense to the TONE of my question, but rather my FOOT up your A$$.

This new usage based billing system might benefit the lower end users only interested in email and a bit of surfing, but it will not do much to bring the enjoyment of true broadband to South Africans.

...is this what broadband is about???? So you download your 30k email with a 1 meg line. Does this make sense to anybody with a bit of gray matter between their ears, because Telkom is seriously lacking in that.

Telkom brags about signing up 4000 subscribers per week. Wait till competition arrives. They are going to be loosing that amount per week.

I WILL BE ONE OF THEM!!!

This is to our gauvamint.

UNBUNDLE THE LOCAL LOOP AND NATIONALISE THE CABLE THAT TAX PAYERS PAID FOR!!!

The way I'm reading things it works like this -

Theoretical Example: all the ppl purchasing 3gb shaped are lumped together so say there are 10,000 of these that gives a pool of 30,000gb for all of them to use. Now if Telkom's assertion that 96% of the users use 1.5 gb that means there is 15,000gb remaining that is apparently shared amongst the 4% who use more than 1.5gb.
