Telkom defends ADSL usage based billing system

hahahahahaha

96% of the users use less than 1.5 GIgs a month.

No s##t Watson, if I start selling white bread for R 750.00 per loaf I guarantee you that 96% of the South African families will use less than 1.5 loafs a month too

Yep, I'm sitting at about 10gig on TelScumInternet.

I think the real issue is this: Telkom want you to believe that 96% of the ADSL userbase only use 1.4gig because that is their inherent usage nature. What is so blindingly obvious to people with intelligence, is that the ADSL userbase is rationing their usage due to the existence of a cap in the first place. If the cap was set at 10gig, I'd bet the 96% would use more traffic per month.

If you are stuck in the desert with 1 bottle of water, do you drink it all at once, or try to make it last until you find the next oasis?

Cr4p! Mail and Browsing? Stick to a dial-up. DSL is not designed for Mail and Browsing. 4% of DSL users use 50% of available capacity - doesnt this mean that Telkom's infrastructure is really crap??? If 96% of users only use 1.4gb a month - this really puts things into perspective - doesnt it?

According to Steven White, Telkom’s executive for product development, 4% of the subscribers are using around 50% of the network’s capacity. To ensure that the 96% receive a good quality ADSL service capping is essential.

BEEG FAT LIAR.

You have oversold your "assigned for ADSL network capacity". If every ADSL user uses their line at the same time - no amount of capping is going to solve the resultant conjestion.

STOP LYING - CAPPING is a COP-OUT.

Assign more bandwidth to ADSL users you LYING THIEVES !

I think thats enough to say that telkom has not screwed us over.
yes maby for the "abusers" it will cost alot. But do you realy need every anime movie ? for bussiness that need alot of bandwidth there is always that uncapped salution.

bwahahahahaha

It's sad to see Telkom's PR and marketing campaign is working. 50GB per month IS NOT ABUSE. If you truely believe it is abuse, you have about as much knowledge of telecoms as Ivy.

"There is always that uncapped solution" oh the one that costs R2700 per month for 1 meg uncapped? about R1400 for 512...? 512 uncapped unshaped costs under R300 in brazil and egypt if I remember correctly. They are hardly first world contries.

Seriously, you need to stop believing Telkom's lies about ADSL being designed for surfing and email... what a joke.

The great thing is that every time Telkom says or does something stupid, MyADSL gets about 20 new members.

From the number of members it happens often...

Welcome to MyADSL, NameOfBeast.

Im actualy on telkoms side with this.
if i can remember right i was paying R219.00 for a 3Gb telkom shaped account
post 1/11 a 3Gb shaped account from imaginet cost R195.00 and u dont have any cap u pay R65.00 per Gb after cap.
before november i dont think u could get any unshaped account for less than 4GB at R450.00+ now ucan get a 2Gb unshaped for R240.00 and then R130.00 per GB after u reach the cap.
Dear anonymity

Please explain to me why my 56k dial up is better than the South African version of ADSL (by better I mean uncapped, unshaped and much, much cheaper). Isn't 56k supposed to be the expensive way to connect to the net?

ATM my costs work out to about R40 \ GB (10GB transfer, R400 total cost per month), which is about half of what SAIX charges.

However, I have to say that if TelkomInternet keeps their current usage model, I'll be very tempted to sign up...

Telkom adsl is intended for browsing the web and reading mail (at least thats what telkom would like you to think), and in that case yes a 3gb cap
is more than adequate this however is not what real dsl and broadband is intended for, you should be able to stream movies/tv/audio , play online games, download large files etc.
if you do these things with a std 3gb acc from saix you will be hardcapped before you can say "stfu telkom".

fact is telkom has turned dsl into dial-up.ver2.0

I have to agree with Potz on this.

If you want to browse the web and use email - get a freaking dialup account

If you want to browse the web and use email - get a freaking dialup account

IMO thats as naive as

Telkom adsl is intended for browsing the web and reading mail

Neither is a valid statement.

Broadband provides two things neither is more right or wrong than the other... that is Speed and Capacity. Some will require one some the other and some both.

My 0.2c worth.

point taken - just trying to emphasize that broadband is a lot more than browsing and email.

Dialup is sufficient for this purpose and probablya lot more cost effective.

Also would include 'always on' ... no waiting for modem 'screaching'.

I don't mind about the capping, it is just the ADSL prices. You need to pay Telkom for the connection and then you need to pay your ISP also. If I can get fast internet I would be glad to pay for it for a good price. There is some users that abuse the internet with P2P programs and that need to be stopped. Piracy need to be stopped when it comes to internet. I think if the prices drop we won't have a problem with capping. Well that is just my opinion.

Surf on:)

Cheers

Except for the once a day disconnect I was reading about - or did I misunderstand this

Where's the competition (wake up IVY!) so that these jokers can be put in their place. When Telkom start losing 4000 customers a day hopefully they will start retrenching the right people - Steven White "Lies" and Rikus "windgat" Matthyser!

'Always on' would be the other major benefit also - except in my experience it's not - although it's supposed to be!

Despite the rantings here 3GB is actually a lot of data, although my personal opinion is 10GB would be a better 'norm' but the true issue of per Gig billing is the price - if it were 0.65c/GB instead of R65 the moaning would stop!

Obviously the line rental should also be a lot,lot less.

Just occured to me ...Telkom have turned 'always on' into 'quick/silent connect'

NO NO NO

I wish people wouldn't buy Telkom's bull. The only "abuse" is stuff like phishing and spamming. Downloading lots and lots of ... linux isos... is not abuse.

Piracy is another story altogether. Telkom is not imposing a cap to prevent software piracy!

Anyway, Welcom to MyADSL. I agree with you that pricing is the biggest issue, but people need to realise that abuse is not doing 50GB per month - that should be perfectly acceptable DSL usage. Abuse should be doing 500GB per month.

Just saying its a lot more convinient for intermittent users than connecting and disconnecting a 56K modem (assuming not all you access can be done during Callmore/Infinity time).

The way I'm reading things it works like this -

Theoretical Example: all the ppl purchasing 3gb shaped are lumped together so say there are 10,000 of these that gives a pool of 30,000gb for all of them to use. Now if Telkom's assertion that 96% of the users use 1.5 gb that means there is 15,000gb remaining that is apparently shared amongst the 4% who use more than 1.5gb.

I think that are correct there bwana v.5 . TheTelkomInternet site http://www.telkomsa.net explains that they are using a basis of average usage. They will hard cap all users of a particular product who exceed their cap only once the average usage threshold in that product pool has been reached.
