I was on capped Telkom ADSL service (10gig - 1meg speed) for more than 3 years now. Then I heard of Afrihost and the good service I can expect from them. So I joined Afrihost for one month (May) capped 12gig, 1meg speed. I also requested Afrihost to take over my adsl line. The service was excellent as well as the speed, I also requested Afrihost to take over my adsl line - but they informed me that Telkom informed them that my line was already taken over by a third party (which by the way was not the truth - it was still with Telkom). During this test month I however did not disconnected my Telkom data.

I was satisfied with Afrihost excellent service and decided to join them uncapped. BUT THEN MY PROBLEMS STARTED: Telkom phoned me and offered me as longtime client a better deal on their ADSL 1meg uncapped service than Afrihost. Money talks and I stayed with Telkom. BUT I'm now in my first month as uncapped 1meg user with Telkom and experience randomly slow-stopping-unusable speeds. So much so that we cannot have enjoyable FaceTime/Skype sessions with our son in Cannada anymore, or even download an attachment from a gmail email.

When I complained with Telkom last week they said there is nothing wrong with my line and did a re-connection of my port but without any positive improvements. When I said that this was not my experience when I had a capped line with them and also not the experience when I tested the Afrihost service the month previously, they insisted that there is nothing wrong with there capped service to me.

I'm asking, is this my imagination or do Telkom throttle there uncapped service to the point where it is not usable anymore? Did I make a mistake to stick with Telkom rather than moving to a much better service of Affrihost for R40 per month more? What must I do? Can I raise my unhappiness with someone higher up or should I just move to Afrihost?

Afrihost may still be offering 1GB free of charge every month. Sign up and see if you can use this account to do your Skyping. Axxess and WebAfrica also have free bandwidth promotions which allow you to test their service before signing up. You might be better off looking at one of Afrihosts's capped higher speed bundles such as the 10Mbps/50GB for R450 etc.

Telkom Internet is currently re-developing the uncapped profile. The most significant changes are happening in CPT as there is a bigger data requirement than the IPC is currently providing. As stated by Ranger it will hopefully be resolved in the week to come. However, I am just relaying the message. I do now know if this is going to be met, in the specific timeframe considering the past 2 weeks.
