I'm considering the telkom do broadband 3 option. Other than the monthly R554, what other costs are involved? As far as I can see, it/s another R400 for the 4meg line? is this correct?

Or the DO 3 closer option, for R887, which includes everything then? ie, 4meg line, 5gb int and 30gb local.

Am i missing anything from either of these two?

Thanks

Why don't you tell us what you use the internet for. Often it's cheaper to "tailor make" a solution. I.e multiple ISPs and traffic splitting etc.

Gaming(specifically first person), P2P, browsing, the usual basically.

Budget is important though. R800 mark is about it. Any other recommendations?

The R 554 includes everything. (Make sure you opt for self install and you pay nothing for ADSL installation)
The only thing that is excluded is your compulsory voice line rental at about +- R131

The Telkom Closer plans are more geared towards reduced call rates.
(You also pay no installation fees for your voice line if you choose one of these plans)

See: http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/telkomcloser/features.html for details on the Closer plans.

from do.co.za
do level 3 includes Fastest DSL (up to 4096kbps based on broadband technology) accompanied by 5 120 Megabytes (5GB) worth of data. *Included is 30,720 Megabytes (30GB) of local only data usage.
It is R554 pm and excludes basic line rental iirc.

Get that and 2GB from Afrihost (@R29/gig). Then when your international runs out on Telkom, use the local for gaming and downloading and the Afrihost for browsing:)

Ok, just bear in my mind i have ZERO phone line currently. Been using Iburst till now. So i what all do i need done?

Phone telkom, get basic phone line installed, cost? then apprently self install, what and how?

and then voila?

No phone line? Ok, I think, but I could be wrong, if you get Closer 2 there is no installation fee on the phone line. It's R170pm and you can cancel it the following month. Wait for someone to come along and confirm.

Order Closer 2 and Do3 with self install. I recommend you get some Afrihost gigs as well.

Total monthly cost is R724 for Telkom and two Afrihost gigs will take it to R782. The you will have 7Gigs international and 30 local each month which is more than enough for downloading, browsing and gaming. You have to use the 5Gigs international before you can use the local.

Also, you will need to buy a router. They can be expensive so shop around before making a decision.

The router is included in the Do 3 plan, if you sign a 24 month contract.

So I'm guessing you don't have to sign a 24 month contract then? As long as you buy the router yourself. Or am i wrong?

Read this thread for ordering your ADSL from Telkom: read this thread: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=83000

Will help cut down on cost. Your cost per month will be R554 + R131 (Line rental).

Almost exactly what I do! (I've got the 384 Do 2 - wish I had a 4Mb line).

Also with Do2 and IS local from WA. I've been meaning to get the 4meg line for a while now but there's some or other problem which will take a while to fix. I think I'll do it when 8meg upgrades happen:D:D

I used to get the 10GB Is Local from Openweb, but now I just blow through my Telkom international cap and use the Afrihost for internation + gaming once it is finished. IS irritates me - goes down way too often.

Yeah, I'll probably cancel the local if I get 4meg. 4meg+IS news server=:sick::wtf:.

Kaufies + Randhir.

I currently have what you have. Telkom Do 2 and Afrihost 3GB per month.
I'm thinking of upgrading my line to the 4mbit package but I think my line only supports 1mbit max.

I have a similar issue. I upgraded once and the line wouldn't sync above 1meg. It dropped a lot and there was a lot of interference on the phone. I called out a techie and he said there was a problem and it would take about two weeks to fix. I told him not to worry because I would have gone mad:D. But now I think I better get him out again.

Maybe you should also call someone out to have a look.

However, the guy said on the phone that if my line supports 512kbit (which it does) then 4mbits is definitely possible.

Then my educated guess is that you are currently in your Durban residence :D

That sucks dude, but imagine how much more it'll suck if they release the 8Mb lines..

@Kaufies - the SAIX server is much better - even when I'm DL during the day I get full line speed (only 38.4, I know, but still, but than nothing).
