Telkom "Do It Yourself Kit"

Update 3...

So...

I phoned them again 1:02pm and got through to Ivan 1:09pm, who was actually very efficient and helpful and found out my order is waiting at the port allocation bay. He said he will phone them now and ask what is taking so long, although he did sound quite interested that i only placed the order yesterday... ;)

Hopefully this will be done very soon!

Am alot more optimistic now that i have spoken to someone who knew what he was talking about.

So it seems my line is adsl enabled otherwise it would not have made it through to the port allocation section? although with telkom one never knows.

anyway will keep you updated.
ciao

What is in the startup kit Longone, I have my own modem with software, filters and ISP.....

That sounds ALOT like what happened to me.. my order went to ports on the 1st of august(i ordered 25 July) , everything sounded good and all.. i even got a responce to say that my line will be done withing the next 4-6 days. a Week later, I phoned them to know why im still waiting, and they sang me the no ports availible song that had to be completed by end august, then end october and then back to end august again(checks calender...)
but, ill he holding thumbs for you, if one gets it done quick, its worth it.

YE LongOne, Im also very interested to know what is in the "kit", if we have our own modem, filters, isp, etc, why do we need the kit?!

thanks

Thanks Xargon,

I will phone them five times a day if i have to, i mean if one guy can get his done in 5mins, then why cant mine aswell?
Crazy telkom.

Neway will phone them at 8:30ish.
see what happens.
ciao

If you have your own modem etc, the startup kit consists of a word document describing the process to verify your installation and to start the billing process.

I have ordered my own modem and just want to know does it come with everything i will need or will i have to buy those items seperately?

You will also need a microfilter if you internt plugging a normal phone/fax machine/dialup modem into the line .. they cost about R40 from your nearest Telkom shop.

I only plan on having the dsl, im taking my home phones out, will i still need the microfilter? Anything else i will need?

Update 4...

Well i just phoned telkom again and asked what the status of my order was as it was waiting at the port allocation place yesterday, so i phoned at 11:24 and got through to eureka(sp) at 11:32.

She said it was still waiting at the port allocation place and it takes a maximum of 48hours there, but they are back logged (telkoms favourite excuse so far "backlogged" i wanted to ask why dont you rehire the 4000 workers you laid off  , but resisted)

i told her a friend of mine who lives like 2houses away's dsl was done in 5mins and im now getting frustrated that im waiting so long...she said she understood and if i can get the details she will try speed it up in the same way (lies, she just wants to get the other person into **** for working hard for a client, i mean omf u cant do that at telkom. :( ) anyway so i will phone back later once i have gotten some details, hopefully soon.

ciao

Update 5...

So i phoned them again...at 01:54pm and was answered at 2:00pm by nicky.

Seems they are still waiting at the port allocation place, they are starting to comment that i have spoken to various other people involved quite recently :D ,so i think they know im not gonna stop til they do this.

I dont want to push them too far incase they just turn around and say that there are no ports available and that they must open a project for ports, which takes a month. So i wont phone them again today. Will do it again 2mo.

What interests me the most is that every single person i spoke to has a different definition of how long some of these things will take. The first person i spoke to, 2days, the next, 2 weeks, the next, 21 working days, the next 48 hours, the next, a long time.

I also found out that at the call centre that i phoned (the one dedicated to adsl follow ups and enquiries etc) has 17 people at work today. They are based in Cape Town. Is 17 enough to run the countries adsl enquiries and follow ups on? I dont think so. Perhaps that is why you wait on ave 8-12 minutes before a call is answered. Iv waited 20mins before.

Anyway she said she/the other guy i spoke to two days ago would phone me.
Not one person from telkom has phoned me back when they said they would, and that was 4times.

So lets see.
Ciao

Just - keep up the updates - really interesting - franks.
No phones using the line = no filter required.
[ed] UM - Me not sure what incoming calls will do the the ADSL modem's ability to discern signals. Mebbe you should just get a filter anyway [/ed]
Remeber to get lightning protection to protect your ADSL Modem/Router from lightning strikes on the telephone lines.

Ok, can i get the lightening protector and filter from telkom?
If so, can i just tell them to put it on my acc?

Do u think i should phone the lady i saw when i went into the telkom office to order the dsl and ask her why it is taking so long? or am i pushing too many buttons?

Your best bet is to get the cell number of a bloke on the street, a techie.
That's the only person that actually knows when you're stuff is going to happen.
When I did mine, I persuaded the person at "orders" to gimme the bloke's cell number, and I called im and we oganised the setup without the middle people, but this DIY kit is all new stuff, so me doesn't know...

Dunno about the "put it on me account" thing - probablee not.

You'll not be able to get hold of the person in the teklom office by phone.

Tell me about it, i phoned there the one day and phoned from 9:30 til 2:30 before i got an answer.

Dont suppose u/anyone has any idea how i would be able to get hold of one of the guys at the port allocation unit?
That would help me tremendously.

Justinct - Don't get them angry. They can become very spitefull. Give them the 21 days they ask and then you start making waves. If you press them too hard you are going to wait a long time for your line - I can testify to that...

Ye i wont push them too hard, but i am not doing the telkom installation way, all these ppl have to do is activate my @#U#@$ line, thats all, just allocate me a port and then activate the line, its not hard.
The thing that makes u wait wen u do the telkom install is waiting for teh techie.
I dnt need2.
But ye i agree with you,i wont push them 2hard.
But i am busy trying to phone a "family" friend who works for telkom and try get him to speed it up. (my last resort)

21 days is excessive i tell you, the guys are at the exchanges almost every day, keep nudging politely, and you should get your way.

Note. politely. Try to speak to the person that allocates the technicians to find out the eexact time of the job.

Cool, do you want me 2give her email address 2u?

All the ppl have to do is allocate me a port, then its done.
So im getting a bit irritated now.
When i spoke to the chick she started explaining how if there r no ports available they have to come make them available and that takes a month...almost threatening me that if i continue bugging them that they will just tell me no ports are available and i must wait a month.

But i am also trying to get hold of some ppl high ish up in telkom so i can speed this thing up,i want dsl now. Although the modem i ordered hasnt arrived yet, lol.
