Telkom f**ks us again

no i mean

if i buy 3 gig of bandwidth from webafrica (saix) will i get 30 gig local free?

Probably not, but it depends on WA I guess. From the Telkom site:
We are giving away local only bandwidth for a limited time absolutely FREE!!! Yes, you heard us, for FREE!! Purchase any of our TelkomInternet AllAccess product ranges and get free local bandwidth at no extra charge for the promotional period.
They seem to stress that it's only for a limited time period, and it comes across to me that it's specific to them.

Anyway I'm ordering one of those 3GB accounts from them until the "promotional period" ends, after that they can go stuff themselves :/

I think they can go stuff themselves! Period!
I'm bandwidth starved, I take what I can get :(

If the ISP's feel that this is anti-competitive behaviour then they should take this up with the relevant authorities instead of sitting about on their arses. It's not our job to feel sorry for them, they should be fighting for competition if they really want our business.

Well if ICASA stipulated local should be uncapped and FREE....we wouldn't have this problem.. ICASA messed up..Telkom took advantage of it. Thats just the way business is

Yup! That's all there is to it! ICASA messed up. They're too vague when putting out regulations and sometimes they don't even seem to understand the technical jargon they use themselves. It's embarrassing to have a regulator that clearly doesn't know how to stamp down their authority.

Does the local deduct from your int cap if you still have 3gb left? else wtf is the point.

Telkom states: 24 hour technical support on our 10215 toll free number. This means you have to be on hold for 24 hours before you get support.

This is what I want to know. Id be ok (for now) having a 3GB int cap and a 30 GB local cap with the 2 being tallied separately. No blimming point if local counts towards your 3GB int allowance.

Will test later tonight, if i can, going to be pissed if it takes off the 3gb acc...

Can anyone else do a test and let me know their findings.
Thanks
J

I don't think they deduct 3GB from the 30GB allocated , if you take a look at the new tracker stats, it clearly shows you 2 separate readings so i think even if you finish your 30GB or so local then the 3GB iNT will be still there.

Spam downloading tonight then, I have 2x 1 gig accounts and a 2gb, maxing that 384k line. bye bye
IS my boy.

if you still have your 3gb cap, and you download local, it does deduct, i have personally tried this before. this is why telkom is such a rip-off. they should give us 2 accounts - 1 for international and 1 for local. then we can switch between the two and not lose out on international bandwidth. as it stands, we use and lose our international bandwidth for downloading local. i know for a fact that they can offer us 2 seperate accounts, cos i don't know if any of you have noticed, but when you reach ur international cap, they assign a different IP to you. this new IP is the same as the WebAfrica SAIX IP range - 165.xxx.xxx.xx. when you still have your 3gb international, your IP is 41.xxx.xxx.xx. the fact that they can alternate our IP's at any given time(i noticed this happens during the day), means that they can offer us the option of choosing which account to use, but they don't cos they'd be losing out big time. it's crazy that we have to use up our international before we can use the local and that's where they're saving.

OMG LAME, I just checked and the saix.news.net traffic is coming off int even tho ive exceeded my 2gb cap :(.

WHAT CRAP, this means that the local is only usuable if i cap my self internationally.

Sad Panda

Well the two readings it shows are Blended and Local. Blended (by their definition) is local + international to get to your initial cap.

So I would assume that local does count towards your cap. Telkom have said this themselves... :( This wasn't really meant to be a surprise btw. :/

the "free" part is not what's bothering me cos ICASA didn't say it must be free. ICASA said it must be uncapped and that's where telkom's non-compliance comes in.

It is uncapped - after your allotted 10/20/30GB (which is free) they start charging you at R25/GB thereafter.
