I dont get Telkom, Like someone said all they couldve done was replace the copper with fibre they, they basically dont require much construction work, If Telkom ever claims fibre rollout is expensive then Vumatel must be a magician , checkout mitchellsfibre.co.za (A Vumatel initiative) they literally winning over low come areas in Capetown offering 20/10mbps to residence for only R399 uncapped unshaped unlimited data usage and takes 6-8 weeks to deploy fibre into a neighborhood.

None of which indicates it is not expensive to install the network.

GPON is not an issue at all and there are clear upgrade paths for it.

Just look at frogfoot, ISP offer symmetrical 1Gbps packages. Their entire network is GPON.

Vumatel aerial is GPON btw. And what's the problem with not having aerial? What's the problem with having it? They're both different business cases and both work well depending on the case.

Yes there are upgrade paths for Gpon. Vumatal Ariel is not on main lines and is not Gpon I can post a pic of internal client feed as well as manhole connections again providing full two 1gbps . Durban only has one ariel install inside a complex due to not been able to go in the ground for about 20 people and is not a full ariel install main fibre line. Telkom max on their fibre is 200mbps ???????????? . If Telkom can do away with their Fair usage policy on uncapped that would be a great start in the right direction..
my apologies on not explaining Gpon and different ont"s specific on Telkom. Only things I have against ariel is prone to damge easier. Hey not all telkom fibre is ariel as well...

What do you mean vumatel aerial is not on main lines? Do you mean the back haul? That's network dependent and generally has nothing to do with GPON or AON (AON is active optical network, that which Vumatel uses for e.g. their tamboerskloof roll-out).

And vumatel aerial is generally GPON. Not sure what you mean by post of the manhole?

Still, GPON has nothing to do with Telkom (actually Openserve) maxing at 200Mbps, it's what they consider the market high end. If you check most 1Gbps home packages you'll see they only offer 100Mbps international. This is all due to costs.


There is nothing wrong with GPON, it's probably a majority of fiber networks and is better than AON for home user use case as most rarely max their lines/burst it. Most of your content is at most 4k 25Mbps, so offering any higher doesn't really make a difference on overall usage, yes you'll have the one dude download at 1Gbps for a minute, now once that flle has downloaded, is it still going to be at max utilization?

There Is a thread dedicated to discussions on this (actually there are a couple) and you should read through that before you post comments like yours as they're inaccurate and could mislead those who are not clued up on the subject.

I'm still disappointed that e.g. Coct still hasn't approved microtrenching, it's insane, would increase the speed of rollout tremendously and we'd avoid all those ugly overhead lines.

Those are both Openserve fibre. In other words Telkom. If you want to use them as an ISP you don't have to take out a 24 month contract. For the same speed some other fibre providers are also close to R700. So yes, their prices are in the same ballpark as other fibre providers.

wish i had openserve, vuma are expensive (entry level).
