Telkom finds itself in deep trouble

Meh really. Its swings and roundabouts. The previous financial statements everyone were praising them as awesome. I'm sure it will pick up again.

I sold my shares in june and will get back in when the momentum swings up again. Hopefully it will go down a lot, a real cheap entry will be nice.
 
Didn't telscum know about non-copper networks LOOOOOOOOng ago?
Now we are being told that the switch is to a more modern system.
How come they suddenly woke up to this?
Boo-Hoo telscum.
 
What actual impact does the South African government owning more than 50% of the shares have on the running of the company? Do they interfere?

It isn't true that Telkom did not worry about theft or attempt to maintain the infrastructure. They're also following what appears to be an international trend of abandoning copper. The constant theft is just another good reason to do so.

What you have had them do to deal with copper theft?

Here in Jhb in my street Telkom cable phone users are peesed of at a pace cause Telkom is forcing them to switch to crap Chinese made wifi phones. They want cable phones.

Those are copper cabled phones were going go anyway. Besides which I'm sure customers would still moan if they stuck with copper and didn't fix it instantly every time it was stolen.

They do, although to a very small extent than they do in full SOEs. As an example Telkom was also in on sponsoring the Gupta breakfasts. They also have a say on the CEO appointment as it turned out the current CEO got the position after Zuma rejected him for Transnet. Also paid good money to the Bain Consulting as did the others.

The government share also cannot be seen as over 50% since the other shares belong to PIC, I think that is what discouraged the state looting cabal as things were slightly complicated.

Exactly! I am being disconnected by Telkom, who are trying to 'migrate' me to their LTE network. But why should I stay with Telkom when there are better options in the LTE market? I'm considering Afrihost when Telkom disconnects me. Telkoms problems are self-imposed. They have themselves to blame.
 
I love how they used THEIR survey as part of the explanation, its laughable. I have done my masters in research and here is the flaws in your research which you hold so dear.
1) Sample size vs total base - your survey only represents a small number of customers.
2) Biased results and quality of those that provided feedback- I would like to know how many of the companies in the survey is getting the backing of their own pay-role
If you research were conducted through a third party with no biased attentions I would have forgiven you. Your results can not be deemed the voice of all internet users in South Africa! You might be making a fool out of a few, but not me.

LOL Afrihost is reselling LTE - you will most prob land with a Telkom LTE in anycase

Agree. They are trying to force us to switch to fibre. I have been receiving up to two calls a day on my cell phone from them for over a year now, and they have started sending Sms's now too saying they are closing down ADSL and I need to move across to fibre. I am a pensioner with a limited income. I cannot afford to start on a new service all over again, and I have to it will be the cheapest I can find. So, they will lose another subscriber. If they wanted to keep their customers this should have been one area they should have worked on. Telling their fixed line clients that they were migrating them free of charge with no costs for new equipment etc. If you change your services that people have been using as a loyal customer for donkey's years and then start threatening them to get them to change at their own cost, of course you will lose them. And as said above, bad customer service, problems cancelling services and so on.

I had one or two disputes with my ADSL line, where Telkom impressed with good turnaround time and refunds on my account. To add : I was personally called by Telkom and was offered a month to month basis for a 10Meg Fibre connection, free installation and modem. This after I made it clear that there are other players in the market with more attractive offers. So thumbs up to Telkom for that initiative. I for one will give Telkom the benefit of the doubt. They realize they need to SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT. The competition for fiber customers is fierce and very competitive. Telkom is now put the test. I will remain with Telkom up until they don't keep to their quality and service, which leaves me no alternative than to seek a better service provider.

how much are they rushing you for 10meg fiber? "other players" cost R399/499.

They were forced to.

As an ex insider years ago I'm gonna say their biggest issue is management which is not dynamic or customer focussed. They have highly qualified technical staff that are utterly frustrated and hamstrung unfortunately.
 
There are so many fibre providers and ISP theses days, Telkom needs to be competitive and easy to deal with.

Telkom knows there's only one provider to seriously consider.
