Telkom fixed-line decline continues

Telkom’s interim results for the six months ended 30 September 2020 revealed what most people expected - a big decline in fixed-line subscribers.

The company’s fixed-line subscribers dropped from 1,975,000 in September 2019 to 1,432,000 in September 2020.

Another government protected monopoly on the skids!
Telkom understand this. Your service is over-priced, unreliable and outdated. Your business model has become irrelevant. And because of the way you treat your customers, they hate you.

This is what happens to monopolies. When the company could be building goodwill they land up building resentment. As soon as customers can jump ship, they do.

Telkom did their bit to aid in the decline, the way they are handling the transition from copper to alternative technologies is very poor.

Ahh Telkom. With all your spectrum, you could have owned the wireless internet space. But no.
You screwed it up just like you did with ISDN, Diginet, ADSL and Fibre.
You are always last to the party, yet the first to cry foul.
You crapped in your bed and now you have to lie in it.

I remember in 2004 I had a blazingly fast d/u 512/256kb ADSL line from Telkom. Nothing much has changed since then except a small speed increase.

Well if one considers that you practically have to beg for 4 months for a upgrade or downgrade of your package then it makes perfect sense.

Why the surprise? Telkom have removed fixed line from my area some three years after laying a new 9km long copper cable to replace the faulty old one - we have a choice - Telkom LTE or nothing....

That's why the private "dish" companies are thriving!

If a company refuses to sell you its goods it is reasonable to assume it will fail. I bought a house in Margate; there were two telephone wires to the house. Telkom refused to install a phone. I was told of a wondrous scheme of mini-transmitters. I asked for this. "Not available". Can I put my name down: "No we don't keep waiting lists". How will I know? "You can ask from time to time." Since three of my friends nominally have telephones none of which work right now, I am no longer interested. One had his ADSL withdrawn. He asked what the alternative was, applied for this, and was told the service was "fulll". "What can I do?" "Well, try a commercial service."
My suggestion is that Telkom be put on the market to the highest bidder, possible AT&T.

Nonsense, Telkom just sent an sms TELLING us they were removing our ADSL / landline without a viable alternative in our small Karoo Town, so they can take a hike!

Well, fixed-line stopped here in September'20, went for Fibre and VOIP phone - not complaining about the alternatives, all working well
