Telkom: Fixed line numbers continue to dwindle

How does that work? You have to have a fixed line to have ADSL

It means that people that don't have ADSL like my grandparents swap to mobile numbers or just die off. The only people that gets a fixed line now, is people that want adsl.

as soon as you can get ADSL without having to have a phone line they're going to *** off even more :)

That is going to be a drop of note and I can't wait for it!

ADSL requires a fixed line., no?

Telkom today revealed that their fixed line numbers continue to decline despite an increase in ADSL subscribers

Well there is 4.4 million fixed lines and only like a few hundred Thousand ADSL lines. So Fixed lines can decline while ADSL numbers increase.

Padayachi (sp?) said LLU by November next year. Tic toc, tic toc...

And if that trend continues there will be more fixed lines, the more
ADSL lines you have the more fixed lines you have, in SA that is.

yes but there are more people with only Fixed lines cancelling then there are people signing up with ADSL. So until there are the same amount of Fixed lines as ADSL lines it will continue to go down.

The point is Telkom is very and I mean very rich. These guys are scamming us and laughing in all of our faces. I mean even their 8ta crap already has around 190,000 users...in 1 MONTH.

Is corruption the only way to the top in this continent? Perhaps we as consumers are too weak, we also need to be more aggressive if we want things changed.

Fixed line decreased by 200k and ADSL lines increased by 50k?

Do they really find it surprising? They refuse to replace stolen lines, so when an entire neighbourhood's main line gets jacked, they lose a lot of fixed line subscribers (and ADSL with that)

Maybe they would not loose so many customers if:

You were not forced to pay the R135 line (voice) rental
If their ADSL line rental prices were not so ridiculous

If the trend is more towards ADSL lines it is probably because data is becoming more important than voice.

However, the growth in ADSL subscriptions could actually be under threat as we speak.

As a person who has never had an ADSL line, I find no reason why I should get it when there are other options through which I can get broadband. The increase in ADSL lines was probably because ADSL was considered as the fastest and most steady type of Internet connection a few months ago. However, a lot has changed since a few months ago. There are other ways of connecting securely with high speeds.

If Telkom does not bring its ADSL line subscriptions down soon, they will not be getting new customers. Right now they are relying on companies like Mweb and axxcess to bring in more subscriptions for them with their lower per gig offerings. It is not Telkom's offerings that are bringing in more customers.

People are basically forced to pay R130/mth + to Telkom so that they can get a service from other companies.

If they drop the line rental on ADSL they would loose around 400 000 subscribers in one go.

There is no real alternative to using ADSL for business.
