Hi Guys,
I need your help in deciding whether I should take advantage of Telkoms free FTTH deal.

I had them visit me yesterday to tell me all about it. They told me they are replacing the copper with fibre in my area, and that they can switch me to fibre without an installation cost, and they will include a free modem. This sounded good, but they said I would need to sign a 2 year contract, which I am very reluctant to do.

My current setup and cost is:
ADSL 10mb/s + Landline + Weekend Callcacher = R631/Month
Vox Telecom FatPipe 150GB Data promo, Free data from 12am-6am and 6 month worth of data rollover = R169/Month
Total = R800/Month

I have a very stable line and because it's a capped account almost always can download at 1.2MB/s, so I'm very happy with what I have.

The Telkom guys offered me:
10mb/s Fibre with 50GB data + 50GB Night surfer data for R699/Month (on contract for 24 months)
20mb/s Fibre with 50GB + 50GB = R859
40mb/s Fibre with 100GB + 100GB = R1099
100mb/s Fibre with 200GB + 200GB = R1599

The upload speeds on their fibre isn't the same as their download speeds, which I though was one of the major benefits of fibre.

Will 10mb's fibre be much faster and is it worth the upgrade, or should I just stay with what I have? Their data is a lot less than I currently get, and if I cancel my data with Vox, then I'll lose out on the promo price I got when I signed up with them.
Also if I sign up with them, would I be able to switch to another fibre provider like 123net, if I am using telkoms infrastructure?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thnaks

No, I personally wouldn't only because of that 2 year contract. If you can get fibre and are interested in moving onto fibre, then 40mb/s or 100mb/s should be your only consideration. 10mb/s ADSL to Fibre to me would be a waste.

If you have the cash, order 100MB Fibre with ISPAfrika.co.za (month to month)
- Pay your R1700 once off installation fee.
- Pay the monthly R729 rental.
- Use existing modem (possible depending on which you have)
- Use existing data account from Vox (schedule downloads from 12am onwards)

That's my current plan, as soon as Telkom resolve the install issue.

Rather pay an installation fee and go with ISPAfrika + Afrihost for data.

No one at Telkom, Facebook, Call centre or website can tel me what their out of bundle rate for FTTH is. So, If I deplete my 50 Gigs, what is the OOB (Out Of Bundle) rate? Nope, they dont have one.

Sounds like a good plan. But I'm sure I read somewhere that the R169 Vox deal is only applicable to ADSL data. Can it be used on fibre? Is there a difference, or is data the same on either adsl or fibre?

It works for either or. Underlying infrastructure doesn't make a difference.

OK. This is sounding good. Someone also just told me that the conversion to fibre by telkom is a 2 month free trial, and if you don't want to, then you can go back to your current setup, but remain on their fibre network, thereby getting the modem and installation for free, and not getting locked into a contract. Can anyone confirm this. The Telkom reps never mentioned it was a free trial, before signing up for the contract.

It is a current promotion - not sure about the cut-off dates.

Well for one, international pings should be better. Secondly fibre doesn't have the same overheads as ADSL so you should get a tiny speed bump even though they're both "10MB/s". Fibre upload should still be better even if it's not completely symmetrical.

Remember that you can still use your VOX account on the Telkom Fibre line.

You might be able to avoid the contract if you pay for the router...

If it was me. I'd probably do it. I'd just get the smallest data account and get my data somewhere else.

So I just called Telkom about their free upgrade to fibre promotion.
They are offering 50GB/month on a 10mb/s fibre line with free modem and installation. The trial lasts 2 months. If you want to revert to your original line speed and data after the trial then you can, and still keep the modem and run everything on your new line.

So I say I'd like to do the free trial, and the lady at Telkoms call centre says the promotion was running for 3 months, and is now over. Is she right? Did I miss it? Sounds odd seeing as though they only visited me on Monday this week. Anyone else able to sign up on the free trial? I only started seeing advertising for this from mid Feb, so if its running for 3 months, then it should still be on right?

If fiber was available in my area and Telkom offered me a 10 MB line at the same price that I'm currently paying for my 8 MB ADSL line R399 per month or evenR600 if you include analog rental, I would jump at the chance, even if it's a 24 month contract. I would however first confirm if I will still be able to use Afrihost as my ISP after using up the 50 GB or whatever Telkom gives with their smallest package.
