Telkom hikes prices

And rightly so.

The issue IMO is that telecoms and internet specifically isn't a 'normal' product in that in free & competitive markets overseas the price has generally been dropping, either in absolute terms or in greater speed/cap for the same price which hasn't been happening in SA. In reality we need it to happen even more in SA due to the inflated Telkom prices that we've been paying so even though Telkom's increases are below inflation they're still massively overpriced.

Exactly.

Man, how can people still be defending Telkom's high prices, even when they actually increase them? Especially damn line rental!

Silver lining folks...That's what i'm pointing out. In this bleak economic climate with everything going up by very large amounts, a gentle increase below inflation is at least bearable.

My most important point was about the shareholders - they are the ones you need to yell at. The fact that they would tolerate such small increases is amazing to me.

They're not tolerating anything. Telkom's being forced to go from an inflated monopolistic pricing environment to one which takes into account competition so by further increasing prices all they're doing is making themselves less competitive and losing more business to competitors. Also their increases on consumer packages are around 11%, hardly a gentle increase below inflation.
