Telkom home fibre launch date set

One other thing that does worry me with the fibre connection being effectively locked to a single ISP... will the increased reliability of the connection between my house and the exchange outweigh the inability to switch ISPs when my ISP is having problems. I have frequently been able to solve intermittent poor internet performance by switching to a different ADSL account on another ISP, and that happens far more often for me than physical line issues. I'm sure it's different for others, but for me personally that could make me think twice about switching.

That would depend on whether your ISP would allow you to input another ISP's account details onto "their" line. I would think not...

Yeah, I can't really picture it. ISPs providing their own equivalent IP Connect service to cross-connect to other ISPs and having all the requisite deals in place to make that work? Naaaah.

And the article mentions that Telkom are looking at expanding that open access model to the DSL services... will be plenty of unhappy "multiple ISP" customers around!

In essence isn't this a form of LLU?

Doesn't that mean that Telkom will offer the FTTH product with your internet access still supplied by the ISP? Or will you still have copper from telkom for analogue line and fibre for data?

I am still currently on the fibre trial, and the "analogue" phone line is also over fibre. No copper anywhere near my place. Only now if the power is down, no land line. Copper provided its own power for the land line.

This is going to be interesting. It's unfortunate Telkom is the one to take ftth for a test drive and we all know how much they are going to ask for it. I would have a wider smile if this test phase was being conducted by any other competitor besides helkom

Any other licensed competitor can install / build the FTTH/B.
