Telkom cable stolen in our area a few months ago - overhead lines. Anyway, Telkom did a temporary fix - apparently they are not replacing the cable and I understand a temporary fix to mean that they have replaced the good cable with an inferior cable. Technician told me it was a budgetary issue as they had no money!

A friend of mine has had the same problem and was also told that they are not replacing cables anymore and only doing temporary fixes.

My uncapped 4Mb line now only stabilizes at around 2mb so my speed is being greatly reduced as time passes and as they make more connections along the line (perhaps called splicing), the slower I get (but still being charged the same of course).

The attitude seems to be take it or leave it...

So I have a few questions - would appreciate someone in the know to explain Telkoms plans with regards to their infrastructure....

What exactly is a temporary fix?
How are they going to survive on installing inferior quality lines?
How do they think they are going to retain their customers like this?

Ideally I would live to have access to fibre but I still see this as years away. Dark fibre has been run to my corner - pointless though as I cannot acces it! Our speeds in SA are already way behind the rest of the world and we are getting slower, not faster!

Your lucky that they at least replaced (although inferior) the cable for you. I've been at it with Telkom for months now, and they refuse to do anything about our lines that have been stolen for the third time. It's been stolen since February this year.

I was told the new 'policy' is that when lines are stolen 3 times they will not replace them anymore (no more money). A customer living in such an area is then called a TBI client. They will then advise you to switch to wireless. If you find a clued-up consultant that is.

They have a WCDMA product called FLLA -fixed line look alike, which is fine for the phone side of things, but sucks for data because it works on 3g and the data is charged at 3g rates too.

Apparently they don't do Wimax anymore either.

The attitude seems to be take it or leave it...

Same experience I had. Had to look up all the alternatives Telkom offers to fixed lines myself since the Direct shop personnel don't know anything.

Anyway, good luck in getting Telkom to replace those cables :p

They will survive because they are still the monopoly in this country and still the only provider of fixed lines capable of handling ADSL. :(
