Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

There was a trasmission failure in Gauteng affecting half of our IPC capacity, as well as one of two peering links to Google.

For some reason, while the traffic is usually load-balanced across the links, when one links failed, not all traffic failed over to the other link, , affecting any Google services available in Johannesburg. Since bgp to Google was up they didn't automatically reroute.

We took some diagnostics and will compare to the status now that the links have recovered.

Traffic will not be managed correctly for a few more minutes while traffic normalises.

Would this affect sending email from Outlook client to any gmail accounts - which is not working with my current telkomsa account anymore, tried outlook on two new pc`s, no firewall enabled, tried thunderbird and get smtp errors and 0x80042109 errors in MS Outlook. The mails sometimes send, just never arrive. Sending to any othe racc works fine though, so weird.
Called telkom and they say not blacklisted :-(

No, it wouldn't cause this. Please mail details (SMTP settings, email address you are sending from and to, error message etc.) to support at telkomsa dot net and PM me the ticket number, and I will get the email team to have a look.
 
So regarding Durban, the stats show that one issue has been resolved, in that the experience is more uniform (no more 25% consumer uncapped being worse affected). However, it looks like on average the experience isn't that much better yet.

In all honesty it's worse tonight, I cannot stream anything whatsoever, browsing is like wading through molasses, latency has more than doubled and to rub salt into wounds Telkom cleared my fault without confirming whether my issue is resolved or not.

Yep, tonight is pretty bleak, to say the least.

We are awaiting proposals from wholesale for IPC upgrades for all 3 sites, with Durban getting the biggest proportional upgrade, to address the average experience. Unfortunately since we haven't received a proposal yet it is unlikely we will be able to get the upgrade before Monday afternoon, even Tuesday is optimistic if we receive a proposal tomorrow.

@ponder, do you have a spare account to use in the meantime? Sucks all you guys have to go through this but we can see that it is getting the highest of priorities to get sorted.

I have a couple of those free accounts, cybersmart, fnb etc but I cant be bothered, seeing as it's weekend I'll just resort to drink & watch the sharks & boks play.

I am however gonna biatch about them clearing my fault without confirming.

As far as performance goes, noticed YT this morning jumping to 720p using 2Mbps account however it is struggling to keep constant now with upto 1.5s buffers. Maybe some tweaking needed :)

Wait until 5pm and the bottom will start dropping out, that's about the time the drinking is gonna start for the 7pm Sharks game. Pfft who needs internet...
 
Is there a problem with the Telkom SMTP servers at the moment. I am getting "the mail server sent an incorrect greeting 4.3.2 All server Ports are busy" message when I try and send email....
 
I sure something is up on the Telkom backbone as I'm having wierd intermittent slowdowns with certain sites when browsing but other sites and protocols are fast. Started yesterday and is still happening. Couldn't even download a 3mb image as it kept going to 0bps. Going to try some trial accounts to see if that resolves it.

May have been related to the transmission failure in Gauteng this morning (09h40 to 12h04) affecting half our IPC and SAIX capacity.
 
Reddit has just stopped working from time to time over the last two days. Change over to my Afrihost account and it works fine.
 
Since this will only be fixed on mon/tue does anyone know of a cheap alternative I can use this weekend? Getting 50-100k on my 4MB and lets not talk about the ping :(
