Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

See my answers between your replies. I'll think about sending you a fault ref.

If the tickets you say you logged regarding gaming were Telkom Internet tickets (e.g. you got emails back from support at telkomsa dot net) and not "line faults" (which our team doesn't have access to), please PM me the ticket numbers.

When I really pushed my 4mb Uncapped in May, I did 260GB. The most I've ever done, and this was all daytime/peak usage. Never used the 00:00-6am time frame. The green bar was only half way by month end, and I've never been throttled. From what I've gathered, reading other member's posts here, the midnight-7am download window doesn't affect the usage bar at all, so theoretically you could do a LOT more on 10mb if your downloads are scheduled during that time.
I take it you took the gap because these accounts were working better in May.

This is the problem - that it suddenly tanked when TI decided to shape and throttle extremely heavily.

All Telkom problems are reported as line faults, no matter what we say. They are also closed with no resolution or contact.
This is a known phenomenon that still needs to be addressed.

The escalation centre is in possession of all the facts. However we soldier on without anyone tackling the issues. I reported this on the 6th, then near the end of the month, they said I was capped (but never got the landing page + the line was green) and used the capping as THE reason it was slow the entire month and before.

No, there have been problems in Durban since June, which ranger has advised is being sorted out. If it is sorted out within the next couple of weeks before my cancellation goes through, I will retract it and stick with them. To be honest, TI has been the best ISP I've used so far. The good outweighs the bad. It's just the past few months that have been frustrating, to say the least.

Sheesh....
I have had my 4mb uncapped now for about 4 months.
Average about 170 Gig / month
And so far every month I get a red bar and 56k line speeds......
Normally happens around the 29th or so of the month, and so far when I phone and ask nicely they open it again.

OK, but the problems are not confined to KZN and I think they are being misrepresented as faults rather than policies.

You post your experience, I post mine. How would you know anyhow? Telkom have admitted this to me (the line fault thing).
One thing is also apparent. If you spend 20 mins describing a fault to the operator, she writes just two words on the database; "line fault". When the technician arrives at your home that's ALL he sees.

If that is what happened to you after you CLEARLY told them that your GAMING was being impacted, then supply ranger with all those fault ref numbers. He can trace the call centre operator that took each call, listen to the calls and then determine what went wrong and they can implement corrective action.

Hi all
Glad to hear that ti is on the road to recovery
I would like to just ask one or two things if anyone can assist me

Does anyone know what the throttle data limit for a 10mbps uncapped line is atm
I usually schedule my down loads at the 12am to 7 am night surfer period but towards the end of the month i often switch to use day time as well so as to get as close to the maximum possible data per month without reaching throttle limit (as i play games every evening and i don't want to be throttled in my gaming)

Also would like to ask what software you use to measure cumulative data totals for the month as on the ti tracker for telkom it only shows the green usage bar and i can't find a link anywhere to see exactly how much data i am using

Best regards
From vangoroth

Not picking on you but this is the reason why uncapped is failing with every ISP. People feel that if they didn't get the maximum amount of data they can then they being robbed somehow. This is why uncapped isn't working for every ISP. Why can't we just download what we consume?

The ISP should get an average from customers who use and those who don't use data. It should even out.

If a person downloading 100Gig is impacting on the network (the 1%) then there is something wrong.

They don't seem to understand what customers do with the data. I suspect those who cut games have no children and can't see beyond their noses. Clearly TI sees all torrents as evil.

Until we get a younger, more dynamic person in that department, they will remain hopelessly out of touch with their customers.

Maybe because of your average use ? I normally average around 100GB at most. I have a few occasions where it goes above that, but my average still remains more or less constant, which is why I was looking at the Afrihost 100GB capped option if I left TI.

Schedule your non-essential downloads to start at 00h05 and end at o6h55.

I average between 270-290GB per month on my 4Mbps account.

Out of interest, I use Jdownloader. I've never been able to find a scheduler in there. What's a decent (free) download manager that can do scheduled downloads ?

I think you got it slightly wrong here, it's not so much how much you download but when. Daytime data is peak data. With ISP's like Ti and WebAfrica incentivising their users by promoting downloads between 00:00-06:00 (Ti till 07:00) and having these downloads not count towards their usage or Star ratings. To me thats a sweet deal thats seems to be working for those willing to adapt.
It seems like your unwilling to change, instead wanting your ISP to change to suit you. That business model wont work unless your willing to pay thousands for your own un-contended unshaped IPC bandwidth.

You seem hell bent on sticking to using torrents, I offered a way for you to get the content you via another medium namely nzb's. But you don't seem to want to try it. See, this is why I get the feeling you want your ISP to change to how you like things done....

This forum is full of people that either work in the IT/ISP industry or have a vested interest or passion regarding the subject. That is why you will always find someone here that's willing to assist and help you with any issues you have.
You make this difficult because we offer solutions or alternatives but you prefer complaining.

I have yet to see an official notice from Telkom saying that downloads overnight don't contribute to your ration.

Despite scheduling nearly all major activity to post-midnight, I was capped when the usage bar was green, so even that is not an indicator. When I queried this they used my download figure as the reason, so clearly there are other factors at play.

There is a press release saying games are not encouraged, then another saying they are prioritised. Whom to believe?

I believe this is the only ISP that has cut torrents in this way.

What we need is more official clarity, not rumours. We didn't even get a letter.

We need consistency. Everything was fine until some bright spark implemeted this draconian policy. Lots of people find it unfair. Must I now find a new ISP every time they do a u-turn for uncapped?

Got this in an email from Telkom Internet:

"Beyond its innovation in offering the SoftCap feature to all customers, Telkom Internet will be extending it’s Free Night Surfer data by an hour from 1 September, giving you free data from 12am to 7am. Scheduling all your upgrades, bulk emails, file backups and downloads during these times will save you data and money. This is available for both business and home users."

I take it you didn't get it?

Nothing even remotely similar or even mentioning the price increase.
