Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

There seem to be major issues with all my ISP accounts (except MWEB). Throughput is in the toilet, especially international.

I am starting to suspect that even though some ISP are to blame, Telkom is the one common denominator. I think their new policy of enforcing their FUP has had a blanket effect on ALL accounts and ISP's, not just their clients. Maybe someone made a stuff-up and thought it might be cool the enforce the FUP on the user LINES, as opposed to their ISP accounts?

...this might explain the sorry state of internet at the moment? I can't see how every ISP in the country is all of a sudden experiencing massive up-take and contention at the same time.

I'm all ears... stranger things have happened. Telkom's exchange upgrades have not been going very well. Many of the new cards they have installed are extremely sensitive... Insider info is that ALL the cards installed since February this year, are going to be replaced with a completely new type - this to fix the existing issues, and to ready the various exchanges for potential VDSL and Fibre connections.

Of course, we all wait in anticipation :p

If your query is congestion or even DSL network related then you are in the wrong thread.

Your question has already been answered elsewhere, either on the ADSL or VDSL sub-forums.

But if you are referring to ADSL then, yes, Telkom is busy replacing the backplanes on certain DSLAMs to allow them to offer ADSL speeds of up to 20Mbps. But this has nothing to do with a FUP (which is ISP related).
 
Seriously bad evening for uncapped.

If you sat me down and said; "What can we do to get rid of all the customer in the Cape?", this is the quality of service I would provide.
 
And yet another day of AntiGanda complaining about TI. Just out of interest AntiGanda, why are you still with TI if the service is as bad as you are making it out to be? There are a few other ISP's out there that is cheaper, and "better".

He / She is either a masochist or is not the account holder. Mother / Father / SO is paying the bill. I can honestly think of no other reason. I mean, it really is as simple as picking up the 'phone, cancelling TI, logging onto www.anyotherisp.co.za and signing up.

Not my point at all... didnt say that it was news that they are upgrading... was pointing out that the ALREADY upgraded exchanges are experiencing problems due to faulty cards - these "new" cards are being replaced AGAIN.
As someone who IS a Telkom client, I thought it might be some helpful info for those experiencing poor throughput across the country. Currently, there seem to be issues with ALL ISP's... it isn't a far stretch to see a commonality. While many ISP HAVE over-sold their networks causing slow internet speeds, it is naive to believe that ALL of these ISP's have done so at exactly the same time, or that they ALL have increased their subscriber base 10 fold in such a short time.

While I do appreciate your input and knowledge on a lot of subjects on this forum, thinking that I don't know the difference between Telkom Internet (ISP) and Telkom Wholesale (IPC and other products) is a bit condescending.

As I said, I offered some info based on my experiences in Cape Town with the various ISP accounts I have (AND TELKOM).
Or, it must be just sheer coincidence that if you read the threads for the various other ISP's in this forum, that they too are experiencing the same issues as Telkom Internet clients????

WC were the first to roll out the French ISAM units and there were issues with the cards/modules initially used. True. Those cards/modules were replaced. True. The cards/modules pre-installed on the new ISAMs commissioned over for the last few months were the correct ones and did not require replacement.

So to say that ALL exchanges had FAULTY cards is untrue.

The inland regions are installing the Chinese Huawei MSAN units.

WC had (and may still have) a huge problem with the lack of bandwidth on their transmission links (backhaul). This will impact all ISPs and folks would be told that it is "congestion". Telkom networks section was caught with their pants down when Telkom announced the last "speed increases". They were not prepared for what was about to happen! This is more than likely the biggest problem in the WC right now.

Experiences across the provinces are very different, as can be gleaned from posts from folks across the country!
 
Was he referring to DSLAMs, IMAXs, MSANs or ISAMs?

The example he used for Sunningdale/Parklands, was the ISAM near Builder's Warehouse, and then all the cards at the Blouberg Exchange (DSLAMs). The new MSANs installed in the area are fine and more than capable, but there is a backhaul bandwidth issue, especially where MSANs replaced older SDCs... these seem to suffer a bit due to outdated copper infrastructure (unfortunately the cabling department is not due to replace/upgrade this as yet).

Yeah, the problem is not from the MSAN/ISAM back to the Central Office (CO) as that will be a new fibre link. The problem is the backhaul link from the CO as it must be metro ethernet with sufficient bandwidth provisioned.

Else it is the poor condition of the copper connections from the MSAN/ISAM to the customers' premises...

In over-simplifying, it does appear that I made a blanket statement - APOLOGIES.

My line is 1.5 years old, and I had to be moved onto a different pair, as the initial was already tarnished. The Telkom Tech said it was strange as they had used very good cable in the area. The cable used was apparently one below the current "super-dooper" cable they are rolling out. I was also told that my stats should be better than they are (even though I get 10Mb)... he thinks it's the fact that the cable goes from point to point, and the degradation (low SNR - 9.5db) might be caused by this.

It shows once again that as much as we might know in theory, we cannot account for the way things are implemented :(
