Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

As of 15h35 today there is a dual-transmission failure affecting fibre routes to Durban. This may affect some services we usually reach over these links (such as various Google services) and may result in degraded service in general.

Noticed this but the first outage was actually in the morning, not sure if related but it's been a bumpy day.

One link failed at 09h00 on Thursday and was finally restored this morning after 11h00. There may have been some brief impact during fail-over, but the biggest impact was for the 6 hours or so that both of these links were down.

We have had some discussions with Wholesale regarding the reliability problems on both of these links over the past few weeks (they aren't currently able to offer an SLA on either one or provide any other diversity). They are investigating ways to address this (whether by addressing problems with the two routes we use, or by introducing new routes that replace the most unreliable segments).

Can't they create a redundant route from DBN via Umtata - Bloem to JHB?

They didn't provide exact details, but as far as I understand it there are really 2 routes into the Durban CBD that they can put us on, but these are the same routes our existing links use. In the event of failures on both routes (as we had last night), additional circuits wouldn't have helped. It doesn't explain how dbn-ip-hsll-1 (or the BPE it's on) still has connectivity or why our circuits to ngny-ip-hsll-1 aren't affected, but maybe the routes they are on don't have capacity?

I could be wrong but I don't think the national overlay has any routes out of KZN going south. To verify ranger would have have to get hold of the transmission planning guys.
