Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Can someone give me some advice?
Telkom upgraded my line to 10mb from a 4mb account. The modem syncs at 10mb so no problem there.
However, the speed never goes over 4mb. I rang telkom the other day and the person did a port reset and the speed went back up to 10mb.
Yesterday, the speed was back down to 4mb. I rang Telkom again and they tell me that theres a problem on the line and they have logged a fault.

Can anyone tell me what kind of problem on the line would affect the speed? The reason for asking is that if the line can't cope with 10mb, then I want to go back down to 4mb. I tried to talk to the person from Telkom about it but he says that he doesnt deal with that stuff.
Cheers.

Log into your router and look for the line stats (SNR & Attenuation).

This will go a long way in answering your question.

If your modem is still syncing at 10Mbps and you are using a TI account it's possible the prioritization option found in the TI Usage Tracking tool is still set for 4Mbps, set upload/download speeds to 0 to disable it.

... thanks to Charl of TelkomZA support who diagonised this for me in the past - much missed :(

Couldn't see the SNR but I did find these stats:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 12476 kbps 1022 kbps
Line Attenuation 21.0 db 11.9 db
Noise Margin 6.2 db 8.0 db

Don't know what to read into those stats.

Are you on a capped or uncapped data account? Account might still be 4 meg, hence the throttling. A capped account would run at line speed on your line. An uncapped account will run at the speed you pay for.

I am on a uncapped account. They upgraded it from 10meg on Monday. The guy on Telkom helpline confirmed the account is a 10 meg account.
I also thought that might have been the problem and suggested it to him but he said that it wasn't the problem.

Well that scuppers that theory then.

Shall ring them again tomorrow and see if I can get any further forward. I dont mind if it cant go over 4 meg. Just dont want to be paying for a 10 meg account and not getting it.

Grab a free 1GB capped account from Afrihost/axxess/CrystalWeb and test with that ...

So I checked with a Afrihost account (Thanks for that advice) and the speed went up to 10meg speeds.
Armed with that information, I rang Telkom again (Thanks for that advice also, didn't know they worked on Sundays).
They looked at my account and they now see that the line has been upgraded but not the account......
So I have to ring tomorrow to get through to sales and sort it out.
But at least I know what the issue is.
Thanks for all who gave input and advice.

Thought so! Give them hell and make sure they only bill you from tomorrow.
