Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

There is really something wrong with my Telkom account. Downloads with http using a download manager are running at 100Kbps, nzbs with a paid news server also at 100Kbps. Streaming is very bad, watching a YouTube video on 360p constantly buffers. This is all on a 4 meg uncapped account from Telkom in Cape Town. If I use Afrihost or Webafrica I get full line speed with all of these and can even stream at 720p.

call 10210 & request a port reset.

Oh damn you're right! :( That's terrible. Strange that it actually runs quite stable. The phone quality is afwul though.

That poor phone quality could be an indication that there's something wrong with your line.
I would suggest logging a a call with Telkom to have your line fixed.
That might raise your SNR - evry little bit helps ;)

Had the same problem with SNR and noise on the phone line which caused my connection to drop randomly. Took a month of relogging and escalations as the fault kept getting closed without being fixed and being reported as "slow access"

Make sure that the technician must call so you can explain the problem.

In the mean time you could test the line filter and router to see if your equipment isn't at fault.

YouTube sucks again tonight.

Buffering on a 480p video.

Same video has no buffering at 720p using my FNB account. With some buffer to spare.

This is on a 4mbps line.

TelkomZa what's wrong

Again yes on YouTube for me anything over 240p is just not going to load, http downloads going at 6.8kbps.

How on earth can an issue last this long with no response what so ever? Madness!

This is broadband for Telkom Internet by the looks of it

Each and every one of my downloads are cutting out... Download speeds between 0 - 14 kbps but speed test shows perfect speeds? WTH?

My torrents are flying.

Occasionally YouTube just hangs and I get timeouts. It isn't right.

Streaming youtube is non-existing on Telkom tonight (and most other nights)
Afrihost and FNB are 100%
By 23h the throttling is reduced and TI returns to normal - surely not very useful for most?
Did not realise that 'uncapped' meant one can at most check email, anything that remotely signifies normal 21st century internet use is throttled to a standstill!

its just bad this evening.

I think the local exchange is having some issues, however: My line is syncing at 4096/507 instead of the previous 8192/1024. Think someone at Telkom may have tried to get my SNR readings back to normal -- sad thing is no matter how much you try to get my line stable, speeds still fluctuates like hell. I'll see how it goes. My output power is -18dBm... That... Seems odd. Might be an issue with the router. I'll post back with results after resetting it.

EDIT: Okay, I changed the power unit for the router the ping is fine now.

It's stable, however I would still love the 1mbps upload...:whistle:

EDIT: Every 4 hours or so, the output power goes negative. I think it might be because Eskom is replacing poles.

I cannot stream a thing again tonight
Switch to Afrihost and I get 720P streaming.

I've had enough!!

This is better for me today.

NZB download using a paid service is running at about 50kilobytes per second. pages have to be refreshed at least 3-4 times just to display.

So all normal my side.

I have been having a lot of problems with my 4 mbps uncapped line lately.

For the last few months now, I have been noticing this pattern where the internet starts of fine in the morning and then slowly degrades in quality until it is essentially unusable (this is from around 19:00ish). For instance in the mornings I can watch 720p YouTube videos without any stutter, at night 144p won't even load. Same goes for web pages. The weirdest part of it is that speedtests would show that everything is fine.

Secondly, I have been unable to watch twitch.tv streams without stutter at all since late February, regardless of the quality. I have found a possible cause for this after (finally) running a tracert:

Which seems to show that for some reason twitch is being routed through India?

Latency is fine for the most part, but sometimes I would have horrific packet loss. This occurs seemingly at random though.

Above this complaining about this at Telkom doesn't work. 5 calls to their support centre over the last few months and multiple online faults logged still has not resolved the issue for any length of time. On the off chance your online fault report or call is not ignored the issue will be fixed, but only for a day or two.

So yeah, any idea what can be causing this? Any suggestion on what to do?

Edit: Also, titracker still shows me safely in the green, with the green bar between the words 'normal' and 'user' above it. Basically, the internet has simply been too bad to even come close to being able to exceed their data limits.

Also, haven't been able to use ti in the evenings between 7 and at least 10pm. Been a problem since February.

Telkom's been great this week. Been receiving phone calls following up on faults, and the faults have been actually getting fixed! Loving the customer service.

By the way, for those who think that no reps from Telkom are watching these forums, they definitely are.
