Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Any guides on how I can set this up? I currently have Netlimiter installed, but I don't think it has scheduling options.

My torrent client Transmission has a scheduler. Alternatively I can start and stop daemons or apps via Cron jobs.

You need to provide more detail on what/how you are downloading. A number if clients for various platforms either have built-in scheduling features, or plugins, or automation features, or can be scheduled via os features.

Here are some bittorrent examples:
-qbittorrent (GUI app for Windows, Linux, Mac in C++, built-in scheduling and rss feeds)
-ktorrent (GUI app for Linux in C++, scheduling and rss feeds as plugins)
-deluge (daemon+GUI+web for Windows, Linux, Mac, scheduling and rss as plugins)
-transmission (daemon in C with native GUI clients, can be scheduled by OS tools calling the cli client, rss via watch directories and cli rss clients e.g. rssdler or flexget)
-rtorrent (daemon in c++? with xml-rpc api, nice web interface rutorrent available, configuration file is scriptable enough for scheduling, rss via watch directories and cli rss client like rssdler or flexget)

The official bittorrent app is quite useless, uTorrent doesn't seem much better, for Windows users qbittorrent may be a decent one to try.

But, maybe you are meaning nntp or http downloads, in which case this list may not help.

I also read in the past pages that you have to create a new session for the changes to take effect. So, in other words, I should disconnect and reconnect?

False. When we were on SAIX ADSL (1.5 years ago), you had to reset your modem to get off local-only. All of that disappeared when we migtrated on 1 Feb 2013.

Like other people have said, scheduling doesn't always work.

These people have provided no detail of how/what they have scheduled. If they PM me their username, I will try and provide them proof that they haven't scheduled as they claim (time permitting).

And in some cases, the throttled speed is even less than 384. That makes me a bit worried.

I haven't personally re-tested this since last year, because nothing related to this changed. I will try and re-test this week, again time permitting.

First off, I just want to say thanks for the in depth reply :)

I'm only looking to get some Steam games downloaded. Nothing using P2P or NNTP.

So basically if I start my download at 12:05 and end it by 6, it won't count towards my usage?

Is there a specific Steam server I need to set it to as well? I currently have my download region set to "South Africa - Cape Town".

Out of curiosity, when was this new AUP implemented? I don't recall getting an email, otherwise I would've gotten things set up long ago to avoid my current situation.

Cheers.

Why can I not play on any servers but Telkom ones? Are we going back to the peering issues of a few years ago?

I agree with this, cause from experience, I know that Telkom never messes anything up.

+-100gigs (combined up and down) Tit-racker says I'm at +-50%
Looks like I'll be throttled by 200gigs at this rate

As I noted in a previous reply, the MWEB peering link (managed by wholesale) is congesting, even though it they have upgraded it twice in two months.

We have a number of initiatives in progress to address the cause of the congestion returning, one of which should have gone live already, but was delayed by hardware failure the day we were to start moving traffic.

The replacement hardware arrives today, if all goes well we may be able to start moving traffic over the weekend.

Yes.

All traffic qualifies. Not just local. Not specific types of traffic. Not just in a "free zone".

There were mails sent, but I don't have them at hand now ...

Torrents tend to die by 6AM on Telkom anyway. No scheduling necessary when they shape it to sh*t just like Mweb.

The only difference is that Mweb are not as uber anal about total usage.

So from perfectly fine to fully congested in 48 hrs? Tomorrow I'm probably going to take my own initiative to ease congestion and move over to mweb, seems like they have more gaming servers anyway.

You will NOT be missed LOL.

Thanks for the assistance, I can confirm that this did work. Downloaded half of Brutal Legend last night, no extra usage was added to the titracker bar.

I actually had that package before I moved to uncapped. I usually download a fair amount on the newserver, but lately there's been nothing of interest ;) Game of Thrones ended last week, and good movie releases have been scarce.

Soon Telkom will have only grannies as customers who go to bed at 5pm after light browsing on the internet.

I thought that was Mweb's target userbase?

On a more serious note:

Having been following this thread for many months, I have to say it's nice to see Ranger doing the same. His feedback gives us all hope: I suspect he and his small team are doing their best in spite of budget and policy constraints from the bosses on high. I for one appreciate being kept in the loop.

My 4 meg uncapped has been good for some months now. I don't game, stream or torrent, (The "Big Three Moans" around here it would seem), and only hit news.saix.net for the odd British TV show, so at about 150 Gb a month average usage I can happily download at any time of day without having to schedule for the 12 am to 6 am timeslot.

So yeah, thanks Ranger, appreciate it.

The truly pathetic inability to stream any form of video whatsoever from any site: local (Supersport anyone?) or international (Youtube @ 360p and buffering on 4 Meg? Please!) made me totally give up on that altogether. Want to watch something? Find it, pass it over to SABNZBD, wait, move it to the media centre, watch it later. Only way that works for me. Sad, but so. I can live with it - but I shouldn't have to.

I hope things improve in the future.

@Grouter

I'm also on a 4Mbps line and also suffer with Supersport streaming. I have whined about this for some time and even on the MC forum.

Where ranger and his colleagues are hamstrung is the red tape that they are tangled in (through no fault of their own) and the regulatory nightmare they face whenever they want to make changes. This hampers their ability to make quick changes, as demanded by their customers.

I find supersport streams are much better on my little lenovo 7" tablet using the supersport android app. It handles the stream much better than streaming from www.supersport.com. And that's on my same Telkom ADSL uncapped with a wireless hop from the router to the tab thrown into the mix. Go figure. I seem to remember DJ did all sorts of tests and posted results somewhere here on the forums. Supersport streams just plain suck on a pc.

Will this work with uncapped ADSL as well, I am finding a large proportion of my downloads being steam downloads by my children.
