Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Waiting for CW to go live so I can compare capped pricing & test, though last time I enquired they want my line as well which is a non-starter.

I originally only had my account with them but have moved my line as well.
They never asked me to transfer my line, I chose to.

Browsing and ping have been terrible the past 3-4 days in Kzn, even MyBB is taking ages to load today what gives :/

Yeah it's getting a bit annoying now. Hopefully the fix comes soon.

My Telkom Uncapped account is practically dead, I haven't been able to browse or download since around 6pm this afternoon.
The only sites that will load are the Telkom Usage Tracker and Speedtest.

Anybody else having problems with their uncapped account?

It's finally working again.

Had exactly the same problem last night. Better in the mornings and during the day, but I will bet good money that tonight will be the same story. Haven't ever seen it as terrible as last night though. Speedtest works, literally nothing else - could not load Telkom.co.za
Alternative test accounts both 100%.

This does NOT seem consistent throughout regions, suburbs or user accounts.
I had two near perfect months in May and June while other users in Randburg area and elsewhere experienced the opposite. Now the tides have turned.
Some appear to be blessed with immaculate accounts, such as MickeyD, who will virtually always respond with a 'Nope, all fine here...' - hold on to that line/account my friend, because you have pleased the gods of Telkom and they are bestowing their blessing upon you :)

Question: why has Ranger has never commented on this phenomenon? I do not think it is shaping since while many users seem to experience this, others in the same region on similar accounts have no issues.
Test accounts working fine should rule out exchange congestion... So what gives?

Not always fine here either... went down during the day yesterday. I notice it immediately as I work from home and will notice service interruptions immediately (remote link to office drops first!!).

The last few days I get a red light on my router....with NO internet connection on PC, phone or Tablet.... it happens 2 or 3 times a day. Sometimes if I'm at home, I manually reboot the router and then it's fine....but it's getting to be irritating to have to do this if i want to use the internet.

Wrong thread...

Its a Telkom uncapped account...was trying to establish if other telkom uncapped users also have the same problem of line going dead....so i can't see as why its the wrong thread???

Fair enough Lady-choc. Please accept my apologies for the rather terse reply :o .

Now for the longer answer:

Disconnect issues can be myriad. As a pc tech myself, the account would not be the first thing I would check when presented with an issue such as you describe.

Router settings, line attenuation and noise issues, router type and age, ADSL filters on the circuit, their presence and / or absence and their correct fitment and orientation would all be things I would look at first.

Your LEAST likely problem would be with Telkom Internet, your ISP. (Your uncapped account).

Your MOST likely problem will be with Telkom, the company who rent you the copper wire to your house and the appurtenances associated with providing you with a telephone and ADSL connection. (Connections, extensions, sockets, etc)

Your other issue can be a failing or incorrectly configured router, if the line and filters are all good and correct. (Is your line noisy when you pick up the phone? Does the internet disconnect when you use the phone?)

In other words, it is unusual for an account to "go bad" when it has hitherto been working fine. It is more likely for the line, router or filters to "go bad", causing the issue you describe.

Hence my original answer: "Wrong thread".

I hope I have clarified things a bit for you.

Try calling 10210 and ask them to check your line for noise and synch issues.

Good luck.

TI just called me to confirm cancellation of the uncapped account and offered me a 25% discount if I keep my ADSL line with Telkom, subject to a 12 month contract. Not sure if it's worth it.

HTTP is really unbearable again, please someone stop streaming all that soccer! ;)

I had to change over to my backup account because browsing is near dead again. I wonder when the fix is coming?

Even the local latency in kzn is terrible :( on any other ISP it is normal.
