Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Hi ranger,

What's the situation wrt IPC in DBN?

Things are getting worse here at a rapid rate. I'm not getting more than 50KB/s after 5pm and that's doing linux updates from a tenet server.

Things are still good on this side of the world.

Please post a traceroute, it can give an indication (but not proof) of where the problem lies. I am suspecting DSLAM congestion.

Another Speedtest, just for interests sake. Download is better, upload is still terrible.

Could be exchange congestion, where are you located?

Best bet is to PM TelkomZA giving your ADSL line no and let them investigate.

Lakeside, Cape Town. I have PMed TelkomZA as you suggested hopefully he can give some advice.

Looks like the WiFi is giving issues. Can you test connected on a LAN cable? Alternatively, please check if there is a more unoccupied WiFi channel (Wifi Analyzer for android can help here, there other similar tools/features on other platforms), and change the channel on your AP/router.

The WiFi signal appears very strong; it should, my mobo's antenna is next to it. I get about 8mb to when copying to/from my laptop in the other room, so I'd guess there's plenty of headroom there but obviously there might be some dropped packets causing latency.

So there is quite a bit of latency introduced between the RT56 and the modem. It also seems you're double NAT'ing (wan port of the rt56 connected to LAN port on the modem?). I would rather connect LAN port to LAN port and disable DHCP on one device to ditch one level of NAT.

The 2nd traceroute indicates a problem between the modem and the edge service router one the ADSL network (probably eithet bad copper or DSLAM congestion, but also possibly something on our side).

If possible repeat while connected directly to the modem, while the modem is configured for adsl username guest@telkomadsl with password guest (make sure you know your normal adsl username and password), but speedtest from the link on www.saix.net and traceroute to capetown.spdtst.saix.net (you can't get to much else).

If you still get high latency while on guest@telkomadsl, please send the traceroute, speedtest result and the line stats from the modem to TelkomZA (or log a fault online).

If not, send all the results to support at telkomsa dot net and PM me the ticket number you get back.

Remember that congestion is often time dependent, so don't go test this at 6am, but while you are experiencing high latency on your normal account.

Thanks for taking the time to help!

I've already PMed TelkomZA so I'll wait for him to get back to me, rather that start a whole other problem ticket. Just so I don't lose the info, I did test with my normal account and the TelkomGuest account.

I guess I should stick to PM's from now on, I do seem to have a real problem not just some duff settings and I'm clogging up the thread for people :)

EDIT: Thanks for the advice on how to set up the router/modem. I'll remove the double NAT, didn't realise that was a thing but it makes sense.

Hi ranger,

What's the situation wrt IPC in DBN?

Things are getting worse here at a rapid rate. I'm not getting more than 50KB/s after 5pm and that's doing linux updates from a tenet server.

+1 Ranger please can you give us some feedback on the KZN IPC situation. Things are getting worse especially regarding streaming which used to be perfect.

My internet was blocked and redirected to the 'Usage Tracking Tool' (https://secure.telkomsa.net/titracke...ortal=on&u=FUP) where I was told:

The bandwidth consumption on your uncapped account has reached a stage whereby it is having a negative impact on the general performance of our network. In terms of the Telkom Internet Acceptable Use Policy, your account will be managed in a manner that allows us to optimise network efficiency for all users.

When I login and click on 'usage graphs' it shows a bar that indicates I am a 'Power User'. I used 188gb this month (average over 7 months is 147gb). Is this high for mostly streaming? If so shouldn't I have been warned that I was approaching a threshold?

Also how do I find out what the threshold is so I can avoid being throttled next month?

2Mbps account?

Why would your bar be orange at 270gb and mine red at 188gb? The late downloads?
