Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

A few sites, google, youtube and mybroadband back to taking ages to open, whiles other are loading fine, gmail not working at all. Tracerts etc all fine, showing normal, but browsing sucks

This is happening almost daily for me, half the sites I visit daily die while the rest continue fine

Any one else seem to be suffering with sites failing to load?

Yeah, been getting this almost daily over last few weeks... starting to get on my nerves. It seems to be now working again, but something is off when half the internet dies for 15min or so every few hours. Can't just be me, and by the time I log a problem, everything is fine again

Couldnt stream the football tonight, had to change over to my capped Afrihost account.

meh, just happened again for me, 2nd time today, first was 11.30am ishfor 15min and now 12.30ish for about 10min, google, youtube and mybb unavailable (sure there are more, but these are where I go the most so notice on it), other sites I go to work fine... seems to happen roughly same times everyday, it'll probably happen tonight again around 5'ish and then around 8'ish again. Tracerts and pings to them work fine though, just can't open in any browser

Try clearing your DNS cache: Start/Run ipconfig /flushdns

No, port reset (if you are using TI) can only be done via the ADSL Call Centre.

Afrihost (iirc) have this function on their customer portal and their users can do it themselves. TI were busy developing this but it was halted due to certain other ISPs objecting by claiming that TI was abusing its relationship with Telkom Wholesale.

I hope they do finish up the development!!

Actually, we have been requesting the ability for the past two years, however:
- Wholesale/Networks says the business rules for the existing interface restrict ISPs from exposing the functionality to their customers; the interface provided to ADSL line resellers is intended for ther technical support teams to use. A number of ISPs are in violation of these rules, but of course we have no recourse (it's not like we can take Wholesale to the competition comossion). Maybe other ISPs have some recourse.
- Group IT says that since this is the case, we may not use the same APIs the wholesale interface uses. They don't seem to have any immediate plans themselves to expose functionality on the 'NG' Telkom portal. It is telling that on the Telkom portal the view of your services doesn't even show the ADSL speed you subscribe to ..?
- In theory we could use the interface ADSL line resellers use, but we would be expected to abide by the business rule above, and all ADSL line revenue would then move to Wholesale (meaning we would probably not be able to sustain the existing bundle discounts as, even though the revenue is there, it would then seem like cross-subsidisation - even though it wouldn't really be).

In light of the above, our project for implenting ADSL functionality is on hold (in investigation stage).

There are some projects on the Networks side that may improve matters, but I think some of them have been impacted by 'Fit for the Future'.

Thanks, ranger, awesome insight!

Pity that Dr Barendse and his team did not sort out this mess during the Wholesale/Retail separation.

PS. I'm now VERY fit and enjoying it immensely! :p

No, it closes your current session and when you re-authenticate it starts a new session [see saix site for further details for your account]. I personally don't do this unless i see intermittent issues but a good practice nonetheless :)

The only reason to do this would be if you want consistency between our accounting and the SAIX accounting (which uses RADIUS). We don't use RADIUS accounting anymore (not granular enough on 10Mbps and faster lines with 10-50 GB soft-caps, no ability to rate different types of traffic differently, very difficult to do time-based zero-rating accurately).

We have seen some anomolies, which some people believe is related to the traffic management platform. I investigated one briefly on the weekend, but couldn't see any problem in the short time I had available, and by the time I had more time it had disappeared.

Some other changes to the traffic management policy we are working on may bring improvements in this regard in a few weeks.

Ultimately we need to be able to reproduce it to solve it.

Even though you say the traceroutes kook fine, it would be useful to see them to rule out other possible causes (of other problems we and other ISPs have seen over the past few weeks due to the BNG migrations).

Steaming experience is poor again for me today. 1000kbps stream keeps buffering on microsoftvirtualacademy.com

Edit: Switched to my AH capped account and the stream is working great (so its not the streaming service)

The approach we used successfully for about the first year on IPC to manage demand at peak times hasn't been as effective as we have scaled up the traffic and capacity.

We are working on some changes to the approach to try and manage demand better and more consistently, which should fix this. No ETA yet (so a few weeks at least).

There are some network efficiency initiatives that are almost complete, which may allow us to throw a bit of bandwidth at the problem until tue demand management changes are in.

Was trying to download the Windows 10 preview but I got that unknown network error again?

What was the fix for it, I seem to recall it was posted here a while back?

Edit: Thanks for the response above, ranger.

Strange, my ping in SA is mostly fine, however my speedtest (int) isn't very good, ping wise...
