Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Just confirming that nightsurfer p2p performance is still shot as I previously reported.

View attachment 180023

Strange thing is that p2p is running fine during business hours and only seems to get shaped in the evening. I'm going to keep a close eye on TItracker as most of my torrents are only completing outside of nightsurfer.

So, as I noted, there are some issues in the Cape Town site (e.g. allowing less p2p than the other regions during peak times), but it doesn't explain why you get slower speeds from 01h00 to 07h00 than at other times. There is a *lot* more p2p traffc at 01h01 than 00h59, and percentage-wise much less shaping (but in other regions there is basically no shaping from 01h00)

We'll look at fixing the obvious problems first, and see if it fixes this too. If not,, we'll investigate further.

Of course, what you are seeing could be a more localised issue; maybe a lot of users on your DSLAM are using NightSurfer. Do you have any latency monitoring tools in place (smokeping or anything similar)? If so, is the latency higher when you you see lower p2p throughput?

Netflix and Hulu still unusable in the P of E on my 10mb Telkom account… :o

Same here in the Midstream region. Unfortunately we only have 4mb lines. Netflix I can still get to work sometimes, but Hulu is totally unusable since around the 15th of last year.

Telkom internet chugging along at 15kb/s - switch to WA and all is fine. Something major go poof in centurion?

Here in Cape Town, crap crap crap performance. Two nights ago could not log into internet banking (Std bank), Facebook and even a simple game on iPad could not open as it checks for updates before it opens completely.
Still crap performance two days later.

I go on holiday and when I come back everything is stuffed. How the heck could Telkom consider upgrading lines but can't even handle the current load.

Is anyone having connection issues at the moment?

I have lost connection since about lunchtime today. I have rebooted modem, etc but no luck.

Yes. but SLOW SLOW speeds. In fact it is so slow on my softcap account that pages are timing out. I only used 12% of my softcap. Durban IPC is broken

There is a caching related problem in Cape Town. The vendor asked for debugs as they can't reproduce. If it isn't fixed yet, it should be soon, will have a look in a few minutes.

Cleanups required by dslam migrations to fix routing have resulted in ipc congestion for brief periods in Gauteng (fixed) and Durban, should be fixed soon.

These changes have confirmed our suspicions and should allow us to more easily re-allocate transit/international capacity to Cape Town from other regions. The chsnges should also result in shorter return path and thus better experience for users in itger regions.

How long has the CPT problem been around for? I signed up for a SoftCap account on Saturday, and it's been horrible since day 1.

Hmm, this actually gives me some hope, believe it or not. I was so excited to upgrade my 2Mbps line to a 4Mbps line, believing what I read about 4Mbps allowing for buffering-free streaming. It took a week for the upgrade to happen, but it finally did yesterday, and I eagerly opened up a streaming video site ... and was immediately hit with 'buffering' :(

Now I've got at least a slim bit of hope that it's somehow connected to all the various issues being described here (I'm in Cape Town), because I'd hate to just think I'm doomed to this.

Debugs all taken, and this problem is now resolved, but traffic may take a few more minutes to recover to normal.

I get a "No Internet Access" on pc. I have rebooted modem, reset details, etc but to no avail. All started roughly from this afternoon.

Obviously can't get hold of Telkom guys.

Everything is all green on modem.

Telkom Internet is just useless this evening. It started at around 17h for me with very high pings reaching in the 1000s. now I am sitting with a latency in the 33ms region and struggling to open pages.

In your case probably a DSLAM backhaul failure. You can check if there is an adsl fault by number here (I don't know why you can't see similar info on telkom.co.za ... will try and find out).

iPlayer radio is seriously borked now & MyBB and other local sites are very slow but damned if I can see why:
