Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

These new Telkom packages, are they ONLY 24 month contracts or can i do month to month? I understand it would be a little more, but rather have an exit plan if better things come up.

AFAIK you can do them month-to-month on condition that you use your own equipment, i.e. no router or 3G dongle from Telkom.

Ye, much prefer that. I like the router I have here does much more than most of those "free" routers and got a few dongles lying about. So not wanting that stuff anyway :) Will head in tomorrow and find out.

Im leaving for the UK on Friday, So all I care about really is getting the DSL settings done before I go, how long does that roughly take?

Thanks guys!

This is true. I only took the router because my old one wasn't VDSL compatible.

Hi Ladies and gents

I need some advice. I seem to be loosing throughput every other minute with the browser telling me there is no internet connection when I open a new webpage or streams just abruptly stopping with no prior buffering. Even Youtube is slow which to respond which almost almost always plays on 1080p.

What confuses me is that the router is still synced and the line stats looks good but I am experiencing this issue.

1)Is the internet connection (PPP session) dropping (which can happen even if the line doesn't lose sync)? You can check on your modem, or in the connection history (on the Connectivity page) at https://customerportal.telkomsa.net

2)How are the devices connected to the modem? Cable or WiFi?

Do you see any packet loss pinging the modem from the devices seeing this issue?

3)Have you tried pingplotter or mtr/winmtr when you experience this, if so where does the packet loss start (IP/hop)?

What or who can I contact to confirm cancellation of all my Telkom services?

I submitted all the required documentation etc on 14/12/17 but want to confirm that I wont have to pay after January.

10Mbps line chugging away at a blazing fast 0.2Mbps... did something break, or is it just me?
It looks like there may be a failure between Centurion and Teraco JB1, affecting all traffic sourced from peers at JB1 (e.g. Google) but not traffic served from on-network CDNs (e.g. popular Youtube content) or traffic sourced internationally (at least for Caoe Town) but could affect people in the Northern region as the same underlying transmission for the last leg of that).

Line is down in Lonehill. Lights are on but no connection...

If you have DSL sync but your PPP session dies, it may be related, depending where the break is (e.g. if it is on a route to Rosebank, your DSLAM's backhaul could depend on transmissiom links on the same fibre route).

I gave up on Telkom last month. I had 2 months of no phoneline. They repetitively told me it was fixed, but nothing.

Switching to fibre this month

This is off-topic in this thread (and sub-forum).

BTW., there is some evidence around on social media that there may be fibre providers who are intentionally sabotaging copper (no theft, damage done in such a way as to affect as many customers as possible and as difficult to fix as possible), followed immediately (within a few days) operators offering free installation of fibre only in the affected areas.

So ... don't necesaarily blame Telkom for all of this ...

My lines have always been very stable, but then sabotage would be difficult to hide where I live.

Ja it's dsl. Both lights are on but no connection, I can send 1 WhatsApp once every 5 minutes. Anything I can do?

This doesn't clarify anthing.

Is your modem's sync light on (constant)?

Is your modem's internet light on (constant)?

If so, then no, you have to wait for the cable jointers (probably already dispatched and possibly on-site) to locate the fibre break, assess what the best fix is (use existing slack or pull in new fibre for the section that has the break) and splice a bunch of fibres (often 144 or 288 or more) in one (or I think two if they pull in new fibre) places.

If you are lucky, it will be fixed before midnight (depending on the order they splice in and whether there are any other complications).

(This is conjecture based on what I have heard from people who know more, and I habe absolutely no info on this specific case besides what you could deduce yourself usung ping and traceroute or mtr)
