Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

This doesn't clarify anthing.

Is your modem's sync light on (constant)?

Is your modem's internet light on (constant)?

If so, then no, you have to wait for the cable jointers (probably already dispatched and possibly on-site) to locate the fibre break, assess what the best fix is (use existing slack or pull in new fibre for the section that has the break) and splice a bunch of fibres (often 144 or 288 or more) in one (or I think two if they pull in new fibre) places.

If you are lucky, it will be fixed before midnight (depending on the order they splice in and whether there are any other complications).

(This is conjecture based on what I have heard from people who know more, and I habe absolutely no info on this specific case besides what you could deduce yourself usung ping and traceroute or mtr)

Yes correct, sync light and internet light is on but no connection.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, makes sense. No rush, was looking forward to some battlefield 1 on ps4 with echo playing paint it black in background through Spotify, tomorrow then

Telkom Mobile LTE? Would be using the same underlying transmission infrastructure.

I find it amazing that every time Telkom is fking out, you are here blaming it on infrastructure, yet all i do is connect to a different ISP, and all of the sudden everything is fine. A blind man can tell you that aint infrastructure.

Very odd.

Not the same actual transmission fibre.

Telkom Internet's Northern IPC POP is in Centurion (on the same campus as Telkom Wholesale's NNOC), but connected by Telkom Wholesale transmission to IPC hand-off routers in two different Telkom Wholesale core sites in Johammesburg which are both ~40km away..

Telkom Internet peers at Teraco JB1, and the links from the peering routers to the rest of the network also go back to Centurion (over some of the same fibre paths). Telkom Wholesale wasn't able to.provide SLAs on at least half of this capacity (going to one of the core sites). At the time, we were ordering additional capacity (to leave idle 99% of the time), but with our capacities Telkom Wholesale had long lead times (as thet had to order equipment from overseas suppliers and then get it installed in multiple sites which all have strict change management processes). We were ordering most upgradea about 10 months in advance of our projected requirement, and still often that was too little time ...

Most other ISPs host their IPC POPs in:
- Rosebank (with IS) which is less than 5km from one of the core sites mentioned above and less than 10km from the othet
- Teraco JB1 which is less than 20km from one of the core sites listed above, and less than 30km from the other.

Those won't be affeced by transmission failures north of the northern bypass (N1/N3), where Telkom Internet is.

Also, while other ISPs have to use Telkom Wholesale circuits for IPC (which, BTW. doesn't offer SLAs), they don't have to for other network capacity. However, Telkom Internet was required to buy all network services from Telkom Wholesale unless they couldn't provide the service.

This is why Telkom Internet is affected when some other ISPs aren't.

One of the reasons I left was because of this politics which made it difficult to offer competitive services. We had hoped to be able to get more siverse transmission (e.g. buy some transmissiom circuits from Neotel or Vodacom or MTN or some other provider that had routes totally independant from Telkom Wholesale), but it became clear that this wouldn't be allowed because it may impact Telkom Wholesale too much. The other alternative was to request Telkom Wholesale to locate IPC hand-over routers in the NNOC, which would also have brought them, Telkom Mobile and other Wholesale.customers many benefits and would be more beneficial for the Telkom group, but this wasn't agreeable to some people at Wholesale due to "office politics".

(These issues are also why it would actually be good for Telkom retail if they were a separate legal entity from Telkom Wholesale/Openserve, so that business-critical decisons aren't made using non-business reasons)

1)Is the internet connection (PPP session) dropping (which can happen even if the line doesn't lose sync)? You can check on your modem, or in the connection history (on the Connectivity page) at https://customerportal.telkomsa.net

2)How are the devices connected to the modem? Cable or WiFi?

Do you see any packet loss pinging the modem from the devices seeing this issue?

3)Have you tried pingplotter or mtr/winmtr when you experience this, if so where does the packet loss start (IP/hop)?
I have serious packet loss at time it times out from the third hop already. When this issues occurs I cant even ping any address or ip. All while the router is still synced.

Where do you live? I see similar issues from my line in Jeffreys Bay.

Try noting your current IP address, disconnecting your current session and starting a new one until you get a new IP address.

Thanks for the reply.

I got a new IP but the issues persist.

Who can help. I've cancelled Telkom, services cut off etc. However they keep billing me. Numerous phone calls and disputes they just don't fix it.

So, applied for line speed upgrade to 20m vdsl...Telkom decides it's going to instead open a 10m uncapped business account for me @ R999 a month...wth. Anyone that can help please?

Hi Ladies and gents

I need some advice. I seem to be loosing throughput every other minute with the browser telling me there is no internet connection when I open a new webpage or streams just abruptly stopping with no prior buffering. Even Youtube is slow which to respond which almost almost always plays on 1080p.

What confuses me is that the router is still synced and the line stats looks good but I am experiencing this issue.

Telkom was finally at my place this morning. They say the router is to blame for the bad packetloss I am experiencing. They connected their router and had no issues. Is this true and should I just buy a new router?

My international connectivity has been in the toilet all day - anyone else having problems?
