Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Any way we can get off ASSIA? I've heard of people calling them and asking to disable it, does that work or do they just sound like you talking French to them and they can't or don't disable it?

Depends who you get on the phone, but chances are you will get put on again when another helpful person finds your port.

I had the technical team from Cape Town phone me two weeks ago about my line issues and they disabled it at my request to see if it would fix my issues. It can be done, but once you do a port reset and recreate ASSIA will re-enable itself on your line. Given my distance from the exchange, staying on ASSIA is better overall, but I'm also currently dealing with a big drop in the noise margin today, so I have practically no internet.

Essh... okay so doesn't end up being too fruitful :(
If only satellite internet got cheap enough.

It looks like I can successfully disable ASSIA by not using ADSL2+, Annex M, or Annex L. At least I can stay connected now. 8Mbps instead of 20 tho...

I'm getting a "carrier lost" my side. It says it in the Telkom portal. Internet just disappears and then returns 5mins later. Multiple times a day. Audio line is fine, so guessing they just losing the ADSL line? How on earth does that happen?
So that is the error the Openserve Edge services router / BNG reports by RADIUS, but more or less equates to your DSL line losing sync. Your modem logs may show you a bit more info, but the times should correlate.

On my side it's almost certainly ASSIA-based. I'm on the technical limit for 20Mb support and despite the line's suitability for it generally, I think ASSIA automatically drops the PPPoE connection and tries to reinitiate the line. This started after a severe hardware failure at the exchange in December 2017, and it's been janky ever since. I chose my router specifically to improve the noise levels, but this is about the best it'll be, all things considered.

Just waiting on fiber, I guess.
No, as far as I know, Assia doesn't tough the ESR/BNG, only the ports on thr DSLAM/MSAN. But, if changing parameters on your ports results in your modem having to re-sync, it's quite likely the LCP will drop the PPP session.

That's weird because when I asked what could be the cause of my erratic pings and line drops, I was told that ASSIA might be doing it. Maybe the technician I spoke to was wrong?

I've disabled ADSL2+, Annex L and Annex M and I'm able to connect at 8Mbps now, and it doesn't drop like it did earlier today trying to sync between 17Mbps and 18Mbps-ish. I still see very high ping spikes which shows there's clearly a problem at the exchange level, and it's been this way for months. Today I couldn't stay connected for more than 2 minutes at a time with ADSL2+ enabled and syncing at around 18Mbps, and my noise margins today are half of what they should be.

This started happening to me and now all of a sudden my telkom credentials dont work when I log in to my router. Im currently using a afrihost account details and its working perfectly.

Is it possible they changed my telkom username and password randomly?

Yes Nadir it has happened to me a couple times, somehow some glitch happens and I've had to call them and ask them to reset the password over the phone. Hope that helps. Just to add, out of security, I'd reset your password once or twice a month too.

so tired of packet loss, but what are the chances that it's created my end? no one else on the line but me, i've check my process etc and cant see anything else nibbling at bandwith

REALLY and I mean REALLY frustrating trying to play online anything with this, I've been nagging since like end of april... and im ready to throw in the towel ....

as a side note, when i was having a friendly convo with technician at my corner box he said my corner box is fibre ready, so my obvious question is if i go up the street and try and get people to buy into fibre, how many names must i get, and will i get commission

ROFL on commission i know, but seems fibre might be my only option if 30% loss continues

#sigh

Have they run the aerial fibre on their existings poles yet?

Slight bit out of place, but does Telkom still have dial-up accounts? Anyone know?

I'm gonna have to ask why? You cant do schite on dialup speeds these days, a simple web page will take ages to render.

If I remember correctly, if you had a capped account with TelkomInternet, you could just dial in and use your existing username and password?

No sure if you still can.

Telkom LTE (R599 deal) unstable. Internet intermittently off for last few days. Works fine then internet off. Reboot internet on for a few hours and then off.
