What is the story on torrents throttling? I am currently getting 6.1 kB/s on my 4MB line uncapped. I used virtually nothing this month and the usage bar does not even register. Yet, when I switch to my free FNB account, I get 350kB/s on the same torrent.

Same here. Getting like 60kb/s on 4mb TI. Think it must be new policy :( just tested it with Afrihost 1gig free. 540kb/s

I am keeping my Afrihost as an emergency standby for when Telkom fall over again completely.

I got 6kB/s all day. Then between 6 and 7 it improved to 60kB/s and now after 7 I sit on 120kB/s. Will probably run full speed later tonight. Thing is, I am not big on torrents, but when I want something, I want it now, not after 12 tonight!

The only recent (last 2 weeks) change was increasing of quotas for capped customers. Of course, this may affect subscriber behaviour, as the announcements of free data (which actu ally was implemented more than 2 weeks ago) may also.

I'll investigate shortly.

Something must be wrong, I get 104kB/s on my 1Mb/s line with torrents.

Have you guys tried another torrent client like Transmission? We've seen cases here before with people battling and once they use Transmission they fly!

Is all that really necessary? Changing from Telkom to another account like Afrihost or FNB free tells it all, does it not. I do not like fiddling with new torrent software as you never know what you are getting yourself into.

Well, I spoke too soon about 120kB/s. After that post it settled back to 60kB/s and stayed there.

It's just a suggestion, if you are not keen to try something else then so be it.

:-) Will keep it in mind though. Just seems pointless when you know that Telkom is the problem.

Hmm. Well, I need more detail.

I am in Gauteng, on a 2Mbps ADSL line. I loaded up a newly release torrent, and got to my torrent clients configured download speed limit (160kBps) in about 30s:

torrent-ti-2mbps-uncapped-160kbps-limit-2013-09-03-20h57.png

Let's rule out some basics:
1)Do you get above 3Mbps on a speedtest with no other significant traffic on your connection, or have you previously had much better torrent speeds on TI?

2)I don't think I have your username, if we don't have conclusive answers for (1), please PM to me so I can check quickly that there isn't an obvious problem with your account.

Torrent settings:
Ensure that you allow normal, unencrypted bittorrent. On some networks, encrypted bittorrent is recommended because it can confuse traffic management systems, and thus not be shaped. On our network, encrypted bittorrent *is* identified, and has lower priority than more real-time traffic (browsing, streaming etc.). However, we can accelerate *unencrypted* bittorrent (we do apply congestion control on accelerated bittorrent, but this hardly ever results in much shaping). We can't accelerate encrypted bittorrent or uTP, so it is counter-productive to only allow encrypted bittorrent.

You can enable encrypted bittorrent and uTP, just don't require encryption from peers.

If you still don't come right, please PM me your username, and I will take a closer look at your traffic.

Thanks Ranger. Just saved your post above, for future reference - should I ever turn to the dark side that is torrenting... ;)

Ranger, I do not know where to check those settings. Here is a screen shot of my bitTorrent settings.

My speed test

3336 jhb, 3200 Cape Town, 3375kbps Int. While uTorrent is running at 44kB/s

Will PM you username

Recently upgraded to a 4 Mbps line and sorry to say but I think it was a waste of money as there has been hardly any improvement from the 1Mbps except for the speed. Meaning that the overall performance is still the same i.e. times when nothing happens, everything is just frozen, certain times of the day where you can turn it off and go for a walk as a 56kbps dialup will be faster etc...etc....etc....etc....

Currently Youtube is so to say useless, cannot even get past the start up adds, torrents are dead as they are maxing out at around 30Kbps..........

My max speed test on this line has been 3.1 since the upgrade. I see the average for all Telkom 4Mbps are around 2.6 so guess I should be happy.

Thank you. Hope its something small. :( I know it might be settings in some cases but if Afrihost capped account is maxing out my line and Telkom isnt on exactly the same torrent, after left to run consecutively, I can definetly rule out that it isnt my torrent settings.

Not a solution, but I use this service to keep tabs of my speed. It does a speedtest every hour for 12 hours.
It could give you an insight what are going on ito speed.

ranger, you need a medal or something. You are one of the best people for info on this BB.
