I think I found a a solution to cr*p YouTube streaming.

1. click the vid you want to watch
2. change www.youtube.com/blahblahblah to ca.youtube.com/blahblahblah (ie just delete the www in the url and add ca)
3. YouTube happiness

Every 720p vid I tried streamed perfectly, and so did most 1080p

What does the ca do subways?
The kiss command used to work the same way, except that it downloaded the video, but I'm sure everbody knows that.
Must say though, that in general I do not have YouTube problems.

Apparently it means you will be using Canadian youtube servers. I can definitely see a great improvement.

Same route up to the 8th hope, im guessing 8 is in the same data centre.

My torrent speeds are very slow. Is there a problem in the Cape Town region or am I been shaped.

Currently downloading Game of Thrones and the speed is roughly 10kb's.

If you are on uncapped it is probably to early to be shaped? Maybe there are just a lot of ppl trying to get hold of GoT?

Hi guys

I changed from a 4mb uncapped Mweb account to a 10 mb uncapped Telkom account about 1 month ago. Since then, my internet has been steadily deteriorating until now it is extremely slow.

I have logged 4 complaints now, and each time they tell me the problem is resolved (noisy line, exchange problem, noisy line again, last complaint unresolved), but I continue to experience poor internet. I have had my port reset so many times with no effect.

I have had the speed reduced, but this does not help either.

I have even logged back into my Mweb account to check speed there, but the problem persists.

The problem is this - speedtests are wildly erratic. I will get 8mb/s down in the first test, and then 2 minutes later, I will get 0.3mb/s down. Then it will jump back up. Pingtests reveal about a 1-3% packet loss.

Youtube is unwatchable. Streaming media on the whole is generally unwatchable, but Youtube is especially bad. With Mweb, youtube almost always ran smoothly. I have tried the ca trick mentioned above, but this doesn't work either.

The tech team seem stumped. Either that or they just don't care. I keep getting passed from pillar to post, and no one seems to know what the problem is.

My line is not noisy.
My modem is fine (new, and have tried other modems with the same problem)
[edit] The technician that initially came out to check said I was very close to the exchange and should be getting close to line speed.
I have run tests from measurementlabs.net but I can't really understand what the errors mean.

Any bright sparks here have any ideas?

Well Ranger is our goto guy, but maybe if you can post some of those results, someone else might give some insight or request additional info?

Unless you have line quality problems (high SNR, fluctuating SNR), it sounds like the exchange is congested. I can't do much about that. There are various initiatives to try and improve the way issues like this are dealt with, and we hope that soon we will be able to easily supply good data as motivations for upgrading congested exchanges, but if I were you, I wouldn't hold my breath.

PM me the fault numbers if you have them, and I will see if I can do something with them.

Yesterday my speeds were terrible. Couldn't stream even a low quality youtube video. Last night I couldn't stream radio.
But this morning it's nice and fast again (whoopa!). Ranger indicated that they are doing upgrades, so hopefully this means that they are finished.

Rangers post:

We are running into some resource constraints on some components on our network. This is having an impact on traffic prioritisation from the afternoon until late evening.

Upgraded units were delivered late last week, and we are hoping to get them in in our Gauteng next weekend, and in Cape Town the week after.

Hope your troubles are at an end, but if not... ^^^ that is then possibly the reason.

Are the saix news servers down?

do I need to use T1 account details to login?

Just switched from IS, and can't find much on saix news settings :o

Are these news.telkomsa.net and news.saix.net? What ports and how many connections can I use?

Which works best and do I need to use account details to log in? The only details I can find via search are from 2008 :(

Is SSL available on either?

Both work on port 119 and I've tried SSL and it worked as well.
I think 5 ports, but no more than 2 connect for me.
Don't need account details.

I'm not a boffin on it. I rarely use it, but it does work.

Just tested with very old article and is coming down at about 210kB/s

Appears Telkom is shaping P2P and News servers.

Speedtest is fine on 4 meg uncapped. TiTracker shows usage is green. userstats shows 117 Gb combined.
