Telkom Internet Uncapped User Feedback.

Ping is crap again, second night in a row. 100+ to local servers. Too bad I'm not just a bandwidth hog like most users, guess quality of service is too much to ask on an uncapped account. I don't expect my pings to be super low, but this is completely ridiculous!

Lots saying how happy they are with telkom, well honestly, I have never taken this much poor service delivery from another ISP without leaving.

Can you do a racert to a local and international website for us to see? The tracert will show where the high latency is coming from, which would tell us whether your problem is with your Ti account or your exchange.

Sure will do one in a few, Afrihost 1GB free thingy pings at 40ms to the same server....

The Afrihost 1GB is a capped account, we shouldn't really compare the performance between capped and uncapped as capped is unshaped.

Lets see those tracerts maybe the clue lies in there.

If my exchange is congested, would it matter if the other account is capped or uncapped?

Ping looks better, but its still at least 20ms higher then it normally is to local, and definitely not stable in the 40s:

Browsing, downloading and pings have been very erratic since this afternoon. My ping just shot up to 440 and then got me disconnected from the game...
Wonder if there is a fault in Pretoria or what.

EDIT: Just got this from MWEB's page

"Outage Num:17570
Telkom ADSL outage affecting Pretoria (012 - 321, 323, 324, 325, 326, 328)

Jip something's up with the latency was fine earlier this evening. Getting like 900ms local pings at the moment.

@DemonicBunnee

The ping on hop3 in your local tracert definetly points to some kind of congestion at your exchange or backhaul uplinks.

I'm in a similar boat to you, from 15:00 till 23:00 my speeds deteriate from 3.4MB to sub 1MB (tested on speedtest.net), with pings being very erratic.
A tracert didn't always show high pings on hops 2 and 3 but I had Ranger help me to identify the problem and he determined that its my exchange thats congested.

In the end, I ended up downgrading from 4MB uncapped to 2MB uncapped (I left the line speed at 4MB tho) since I cant get anywhere near 4MB after 19:00.

I would PM Ranger and ask if he can help identify the root cause of your high pings.

Seems to be an issue in PTA, what I'll do is monitor the ping once the issue has been resolved. If it persists I'll bother Ranger again.

Thanks for the help.

No sweat bud. No need to thank me tho, we here to try help each other out ;)

International speeds are very low this evening. I am getting sub 2meg speeds on a 4 meg connection when i do a speedtest. Local speeds are fine though. I am in jhb - Sophiatown.

Just had a small chuckle to myself when I read on another thread how they dropping prices and increasin contention ratio on a new range of products to match Ti's contention ratio.
Its funny becoz if the Ti contention ratio is so bad then how is it I can download and surf during business hours while your ISP accounts cant

Its amazing how bad Ti is made out to be yet I'm sure many on this thread, including myself, will beg to differ...

+1

Last night Torrent speeds ran a bit better but still a bit irratic now and then.

Oh and did anyone from Durban get upgraded yet?

Yes, La Lucia exchange. 031 572xxxx

Went from 4M to 6M, limitation is distance from exchange. Pings are a LOT better, but failed packets have increased dramatically. Seems congestion is alleviated in lieu of stability.

Down SNR 7.9
Down Att: 53
Up SNR 11.8
Up Att: 32

Pings are high again tonight. Getting really tired of this really quickly.

Getting 600ms ping on Heroes of Newerth. Really sad about this account, have 2Mb, joined on 1st November, can't see why everyone is saying these accounts are so good, have not found that much joy. Only thing decent is Youtube streaming, but gaming is s&&&t :(

Slow torrents, bad pings, at night, when you are at home and want to use your adsl...

Guess the search starts fo a new isp, AGAIN! So sick of the crap that they try to pass as a service in this country...
